While many squads do require you to be a certified EMT before riding on the ambulance, the Minute Men instead use this time for on-the-job training. As soon as your application is accepted and you are assigned a shift you will begin riding on the ambulance, responding to 911 calls. At first you will observe, but gradually you will be trained and allowed to perform helping tasks. This real-world experience will help you when you take your EMT class.

EMT receives approximately 300 hours of classroom instruction and clinical training. They are trained in basic management of traumatic injuries, medical emergencies, childbirth, emergency vehicle operations, hazardous material awareness, scene awareness, legal and ethical issues, patient assessment, bandaging, splinting, airway maintenance, CPR, patient moving and limited administration of drugs. We also require EMT's to receive additional training to establish and maintain IV's.

The two biggest differences are the amount of training they undergo to be certified and the skills that they can perform. EMT's typically undergo just over 100 hours of classroom and hands-on training before being allowed to take the National Registry exam. If the call load is high, the crew on the event standby may be called away to respond to calls if all other units are already busy.

If your certification is through the State of North Carolina and you have maintained your continuing education training hours, you will not have to be recertified. If you are certified through the National Registry and have maintained your training hours, you will not have to be recertified. While others in the Recruit Academy are taking the four-week class, anyone with their EMT Basic certification will be assigned to a fire company and begin shift work.

An EMT-Basic or EMT-B is an individual who is certified to perform Basic Life Support procedures such as patient assessment, oxygen administration, spinal immobilization, and bleeding control. EMT-Basic is considered to be one of the starting points into the emergency medical care profession.

The length of time required to become an EMT-B depends on the type of school you attend. At the Health First Training Center, the program is 236 clock hours. This time includes clinical time in a hospital emergency department and time on an approved Emergency Ambulance.

No, as with any other school, Health First provides you with an education that is approved by the State of Florida. The successful completion of the program allows you to sit for the State of Florida EMT exam. If you pass this exam, you then earn your certification.
