Rust forms when firearms are exposed to moisture either from the environment or through handling. Moisture combined with salt is particularly damaging. If this condition is left unattended, corrosion or pitting will occur, marring the appearance and possibly the function of your firearm.

If there is a rust stain on wood or stucco, it should either be drilled out at least 1/4" - 1/2," primed, filled and then coated over. Simply treating the stain or rusted fastener with osforic acid and spot priming is not adequate and the rust stain will come back in a short time. The way we remove rust from machined iron surfaces at the foundry, is with plenty of solvent (or diesel oil) and a scotch brite pad. Wear rubber gloves so you don't dry out your fingers. When the metal is shiny, wipe on a coating of oil to protect it. For areas that cannot be oiled, because of paper contact, try Johnson's Paste Wax. Rub it on heavy, and don't polish it off. Long answer: Different steels are different (see "What's it made out of?" above). There is no "rust-proof" tool steel. The addition of carbon in iron (to make steel) means that it can corrode. Steels that are "rust-proof" do not classify as tool steels (like the 420 series steels used in knives sold in late night infomercials), and they can be used as knife blades, but they are weak and short lived. Galvanic corrosion is seldom a factor with ZAMAK and ZA alloys because of the material's inherently good corrosion resistance. If a small die cast zinc part is electrically connected to a large brass or steel part and immersed in a corrosive electrolyte the rate of corrosion may be increased to the point where there is a problem. How concerned you should be about rust depends on what type of bike you have and where you live and how you use your bike. The worst-case scenario would be an all-steel bike, ridden regularly in the rain, stored outdoors in a town next to the ocean. That bike would last about 3 months before turning to rust dust.
