What refrigerants are used now? What is Freon?
EPA 608 Certification - FAQFreon" is a trade name for CFC and HCFC refrigerants used by DuPont. Other trade names include Allied-Signal's "Genetron" and ICI's "Arcton". Various companies sell the same CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, and other products under different names. The most common ozone-depleting refrigerants are CFC-12, R-502, and HCFC-22. R-502 is a blend of 48.8% HCFC-22 and 51.2% CFC-115. This site is maintained by Mainstream Engineering Corporation and is not associated with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Are there any other refrigerants that can be used instead of fluorocarbons?
Fluorocarbon frequently asked questions [Ministry for the En...Ammonia has been used a lot in freezing works and large cold-stores. It is now being used in large fishing boats and some commercial systems such as water chillers. Hydrocarbons such as isobutane, butane and propane are used in some small charge systems such as domestic appliances and small air conditioners. Hydrocarbons have also been trialed in NZ in farm milk cooling. The use of carbon dioxide is being tested overseas, and is likely to be used for some types of refrigeration in NZ in future. What fluorocarbon-based refrigerants are used in New Zealand?
Fluorocarbon frequently asked questions [Ministry for the En...The fluorocarbon refrigerants used in New Zealand are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) were developed in the 1930s as safe, non-flammable and non-toxic refrigerants. They were widely used until it was confirmed in the 1980s that they were the main source of harm to the ozone layer. CFCs have not been imported into New Zealand since 1996. See similar questions...
What are the hazards of freon, why is it regulated?
Frequently Asked QuestionsThe reason that freon is regulated is that the chlorine it contains can destroy the ozone layer. Why are there no perfect refrigerants ?
FaqPractically, there is no such thing as a perfect refrigerant. All candidates, although technically efficient with regards to energy efficiency for example have undesirable intrinsic properties with regards to health, safety and the environment : Hydrocarbons (Propane and isobutane) are highly flammable and, when released, contribute to the lower atmosphere ozone pollution ('photochemical smog'). Are there any Drop-In Replacement Refrigerants for R-12?
EPA 608 Certification - FAQNo. A number of refrigerants other than R-134a have been listed by EPA as acceptable under its Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) program, or are under SNAP review. The SNAP program evaluates substitutes only for their effect on human health and the environment, and not for performance or durability. None of these refrigerants have been endorsed by the OEMs for use in vehicles, and few have had extensive testing in a wide range of vehicle models. See similar questions...
What is the difference between R-22 (freon) and R420(aka Puron, Environ, etc...)?
Frequently Asked QuestionsR-22 is the common name for hydro-chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC). R-22 has been used as a refrigerant by HVAC manufacturers for over 40 years, but studies in the past decade have shown that HCFCs contain chlorine, an ozone-depleting agent. For this reason, the United States Clean Air Act has set a target date for January 1, 2010, on which HVAC manufacturers must cease the production of products that use R-22. See similar questions...
Is R-22 Freon really being phased out?
Heating & Cooling Frequently Asked Questions by Vertex Mecha...Yes. The Clean Air Act of 1990 mandated a complete phase-out of R-22 and in 1996 a production cap was placed on its production. In 2004 production of R-22 was cut by 25% and the manufacture of R-22 compatible equipment will be prohibited after 2010. Production of R-22 will be banned completely in 2020. The replacement is a much more environmentally friendly chemical, R-410A. During the summer months, set your thermostat back during the day when you are not at home. See similar questions...
