We have an older female Maltese who gets stubborn and growls. Do old dogs essentially become cranky?

Maltese FAQ section iii - The Kellys Maltese
Here again we return to a recurring theme--Maltese are so much like people. Ask yourself this question: "Do old people become cranky?" I suppose most of us would answer that question with "Yes, in many cases they do." LOL :o) However, that's not to say that we can't help alleviate some of that. In many cases, older dogs might have ailments that can cause discomfort and/or limitations, similar to those that afflict the elderly.

Naper Doodles Miniature Labradoodle & Goldendoodle FAQ
Since we have Early Spay & Neuter performed at 7 weeks, our pups have a relatively short time to be impacted by gender-specific hormones. These are VERY smart, very trainable, very family friendly dogs-- I think you will find that as long as they are trained well you will not have an aggression issue with either sex.We believe aggression issues are more breed-specific, or at least genetic-specific, than gender-specific. Our maltese is 1 year old and he weighs 11 lbs. Is this unusual?

Maltese FAQ section ii - The Kellys Maltese
Yes. I would say that is unusual but not unheard of. The standard size for a Maltese is from 4 to 7 pounds as an adult. Sometimes, if they are oversized they may go to 8 or 9 pounds at most, and "tinies" can be under 4 pounds. Maltese breeders should attempt to maintain the toy size by only breeding dogs that fall within the Maltese standard. FAQ Index See similar questions...

I have a 3 year old maltese and he recently lost pigment on his nose. Do you know why?

Maltese FAQ section ii - The Kellys Maltese
This sometimes occurs in Maltese dogs that have less natural pigmentation and is often called "winter nose." Since skin's response to sunlight is to produce more pigment, Maltese dogs with "winter nose" will typically regain some pigmentation in the summertime when they get more exposure to the sun. Some breeders have had good luck enhancing pigmentation by giving their dogs "SeaTone," which is basically a kelp food supplement. FAQ Index See similar questions...

Do older puppies and dogs adjust well to a new home?

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Dogs like routine and once a routine is established for them in their new home, they are quick to settle in. Indeed there are distinct advantages to choosing an older puppy or an adult dog instead of a tiny puppy. An older dog might be the best choice for very young children, as they are better able to tolerate rough play and are less likely to be seriously injured if tripped upon by a toddler. Maltese puppies should not receive a full bath until at least six weeks of age. Even then, you must be very careful not to get water in the nose (and hence the lungs) or in the ears. Also, the water must be nice and warm and they must be completely dried afterwards using a warm air blow dryer. Be careful not to let them get chilled in the process. See similar questions...
