The rules of the House of Commons allow the House to delegate the detailed study of proposed legislation and the scrutiny of government policy and programs to smaller bodies called committees. These committees are composed of Members of Parliament who meet outside the Chamber of the House of Commons in smaller groups.

The Steering Committee ("SC") was established in 1997 by the people involved with the Purdue Initiative. The Steering Committee's goal was to address the issue of educational standards in Aromatherapy in the United States. A Parliament is the period of time during which the Parliament of Canada exercises its powers. This period begins on the day established for the return of the writs (usually the first day that the House of Commons meets following a General Election) and ends with the dissolution of Parliament and the calling of another general election. A session is one of the basic periods into which a Parliament is divided.

Sub-committees are created by standing committees. They may have all of the powers of the standing committee except the power to report directly to the House. They usually have a smaller number of members than the standing committee and are responsible for studying a much more specific subject matter. The members appointed to a sub-committee are usually chosen from among the members of the standing committee that created the sub-committee.

To confirm the diagnosis of a nonsense mutation for the clinical trials in cystic fibrosis, PTC Therapeutics employed the gene sequencing test offered by Ambry Genetics (www.ambrygen.com). For the clinical trial in Duchenne muscular dystrophy, we used the test offered by the University of Utah (http://www.genome.utah.edu/DMD/clinical_test.shtml).

When pharmacists are thinking about setting up an online pharmacy, we encourage them to do their homework and work in conjunction with the state boards of pharmacy. The VIPPS criteria may serve as a solid guideline when an organization plans to expand into interstate/Internet pharmacy practice and seeks to address issues of quality, verifiable relationships, regulatory compliance, and good pharmacy practices.
