The first part of the Theory Test is sat in individual booths using a touch screen computer. Questions appear one at a time on a screen and candidates choose their answers by touching the screen. The theory test now has a hazard perception test. The hazard perception test consists of 14 video clips, which feature real road scenes and developing hazards. The test has a maximum of 15 scoreable hazards and each clip has at least one scoreable hazard.

You should start studying for your theory test as soon as possible; even before you start driving lessons if possible. The more you know about the theoretical side of driving, the easier you will find the practical side. The waiting list for theory tests is usually 3 to 4 weeks so be sure to be well prepared before booking, as test appointments can creep up on you very quickly. This came into effect on 25th April 2001. Any application made for a 1st Provisional Licence since that date must be accompanied by a valid Theory Test Certificate. These CDs exactly replicate the actual Theory Test. They contain the identical question bank (1,000 questions and answers) that the DSA use. It also contains similar clips for the Hazard Perception part of the Theory Test, so that you can practice.
