This is a known problem with the ATI Mach 64 video card. The problem is that this card uses address 2e8, and the fourth serial port does too. Due to a bug (feature?) in the sio(4) driver it will touch this port even if you do not have the fourth serial port, and even if you disable sio3 (the fourth port) which normally uses this address. Disable sio0, sio1, sio2 and sio3 (all of them). This way the sio driver does not get activated -> no problems.

If you have a IDE Zip® or Jaz® drive installed, remove it and try again. The boot floppy can get confused by the drives. After the system is installed you can reconnect the drive. Hopefully this will be fixed in a later release.

This is a known problem. Windows refuses to boot when it isn't installed on the first hard drive and shows a black/blank screen. To handle this, you will have to "fool" Windows into believing that it is installed on the first hard drive with a little tweak in your boot loader configuration. Please note that in the below example, Gentoo is installed on hda (first disk) and Windows on hdb (second one). Adjust your config as needed.

This is not a boot problem. When you use MICROSOFT PICTURE IT! for the first time and the display on your monitor is set for 256 colors, PICTURE IT! displays a message that states "display is not optimized." It offers an option to change the display settings to 16 bit color and 800 x 600 resolution. If you select this option, the monitor could be out of sync the next time the computer is booted. Either the monitor can't handle the setting, or there isn't enough video memory (VRAM).

Black screens on some ROMs only may indicate that there is a problem with the emulation of that ROM or that you have an old version of the emulator. Please verify if a newer version exists and, if not, please contact the author.

FreeBSD's boot loader is incorrectly recognizing the hard drive's geometry. This must be manually set within fdisk when creating or modifying FreeBSD's slice. The correct drive geometry values can be found within the machine's BIOS. Look for the number of cylinders, heads and sectors for the particular drive. A dialog will pop up requesting the number of cylinders, heads and sectors. Type the numbers found from the BIOS separates by forward slashes.

When I spawned a process using Expect, I got the following message: parent: sync byte read: bad file number child: sync byte write: bad file number This is one of these "should not happen" errors. For example, the following question in this FAQ mentions that it could be the fault of the C library. Another possibility is that you've run out of some system resource (file descriptors). The most likely reason is that you're calling spawn in a loop and have neglected to call close and wait.

There are a few reasons this may be happening. First, your display setting may not be at least 800x600 pixels and a color depth of 16 bit. To check this, right click on your desktop and select properties. Click on the settings tab at the top and adjust the Screen Area slider to be at least 800x600 pixels. Second, your hardware acceleration may not be set to full. To check this, right click on your desktop and select properties.

The tongue twisting to the outside is a common problem and has been around for a very long time. Your monitor resolution is set larger than the display area of the software. Space Update runs at a resolution of 640x480 pixels, while Earth Update runs at 800x600. To get the software to run full screen adjust your monitor settings in your System's Control Panels. The closer your settings are to this resolution, the closer the software will be to filling the screen.
