You don't need a bar-code scanner to run RetailEdge effectively. Scanners will speed up entering items at the point-of-sale and may reduce errors, but you do not need one. If you determine that you would like a scanner, there a number of different types you can choose from. CCD (Charged Coupled Device) Scanners. These are very inexpensive but are not as effective at reading barcodes on uneven surfaces. However, they are typically more durable than a laser because they have no moving parts.

It depends on the state you are in and the states you need to read. If you are in a Magnetic stripe state like Florida, Ohio, California and don't see that many IDs from states with just 2D bar codes, then a Magnetic stripe version may be the perfect fit.
