When the boots have dried overnight, rub the suede with the same (dry) fingernail brush to brush up the nap of the suede. Note: If the suede becomes smooth you can very lightly sand the shiny area with some 120 grit sand paper to bring back up the nap. Do this before cleaning. Be very careful not to sand too deep and avoid the stitching.

Gently clean the surface using a cotton cloth or any other soft cloth soaked in a solution of 5% neutral detergent for wool. Thoroughly remove all traces of detergent with a damp cloth, and then apply a suede protective substance when dry. Should the suede surface become wet, dry as soon as possible using a soft, dry cloth. Firstly, you could apply a special waterproofing agent for leather. This can usually be bought at any good shoe retailer or boot-maker. This helps to keep dirt and grime to a minimum as well as waterproofing the footwear. Be aware though, that once your footwear get wet, you need to apply another coat after they have dried. Nubuk and Suede are both difficult to care for and clean. Nubuk is top grain leather in which to grain has been buffed to resemble a suede-like appearance. Both are nearly impossible to clean. By far the best way to break-in new boots is to skate in them. First, start by spending a session or two just stroking forward, stroking backward and doing simple spinning. When the boots feel comfortable, add the basic jumps you can land consistently. Despite the rough terrain and many miles of cross country travel, you will probably be much better off in running shoes, although one of the modern lug soled running/hiking shoe hybrids might not be an unreasonable choice. SnowSeal is good for the sole edges and seams, but may be a bit of an overkill on the rest of the boots. We like the beeswax based boot grease or bee oil for both the standard oil tanned leather and the silicon tanned leather. These are a mix of beeswax and oil.
