We hear civil and criminal cases in this court. A civil matter is a court proceeding in which on party seeks to recover money damages or other relief from another party. A criminal matter is one in which the government seeks to enforce a criminal law.

Both civil and criminal cases are tried in the U.S. Courts. The specific kinds of cases are set forth in Article III of the U.S. Constitution and in federal statutes. These are, first of all, controversies to which the United States is a party, and controversies between two or more States. The federal court also decides cases involving constitutional rights, laws enacted by Congress, treaties, and laws relating to navigable waters.

The Traffic Division of the County Court is set up to hear criminal traffic, traffic infractions and parking citation cases. stated earlier, the Louisiana Supreme Court must hear all cases involving disciplinary actions against lawyers and judges, all cases in which a law or ordinance has been declared unconstitutional, and all capital cases where the death penalty has been imposed. All other cases, and these are those involving litigants who are not satisfied with the outcome of their cases in a lower court, are not heard unless the supreme court grants an application for writs to review the case.

Interpreters cover virtually every kind of case in the municipal, state and federal courts. State court interpreters cover matters ranging from personal injury cases to small claims to landlord/tenant disputes to domestic violence to child support to sexual assault to drug offenses to arson to illegal gambling, to name a few. Drug cases form a large part of the state interpreter case load; in the federal courts drug cases are the rule.

Once a case is filed with the court, it will display on WCCA, even if the case was settled or dismissed. WCCA limits your results two ways. First, if a search returns more than 500 records, you will receive an error message. Second, if you search takes longer than a certain amount of time, your search will time out and you will receive an error message.

Jurors may be called to serve on both civil and criminal trials. Examples of civil cases are contract disputes, civil rights violations, etc. Criminal trials involve a party or parties who are alleged to have violated a federal law and who have been indicted by a grand jury.

The Court of Appeal hears appeals from any judgment, order or decision made by a judge of the Court of Queen's Bench in a civil, family or criminal case. The Court hears criminal indictable appeals from a Provincial Court judge involving adults and young persons (under the age of 18 years) and decisions of certain tribunals or boards/commissions such as the Residential Tenancies Commission.

The Ventura Courthouse handles civil, family law (divorce, legal separation, and child custody matters), probate, small claims, criminal (both felony and misdemeanors), and traffic. The court also handles confidential categories such as paternity and mental health. The East County Courthouse handles civil, family law, small claims, criminal, and traffic. Completed traffic and criminal citations and files are sent to Ventura when complete.
