Heart failure is a clinical syndrome said to present when the heart fails to adequately pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. The terms congestive heart failure or "CHF" are also used to describe this syndrome. Symptoms a patient may experience include exertional fatigue, shortness of breath with activity, shortness of breath lying down, and shortness of breath at rest.

Right arm pain has also been reported. Shortness of breath is associated with the pain and patients may have sweating and/or nausea and vomiting.

Symptoms can include angina, a discomfort caused by inadequate blood flow to the heart, which causes pain in the chest, arms, neck or back. These symptoms, if they become severe, last more than 10 to 15 minutes and are accompanied by shortness of breath, nausea, sweating or fainting, could be signs of a heart attack. Women are more likely to experience only symptoms of nausea and vomiting instead of the severe pain experienced by men when a heart attack occurs.

Most frequently the initial episode that leads to hospitalization is manic. It is essential to understand that this disorder is characterized by different degrees of intensity of the symptoms in either the manic or the depressive stage.

The illness usually begins with a high fever (measured temperature greater than 100.4°F [>38.0°C]). The fever is sometimes associated with chills or other symptoms, including headache, general feeling of discomfort, and body aches. Some people also experience mild respiratory symptoms at the outset. Diarrhea is seen in approximately 10 percent to 20 percent of patients.

Persons with hepatitis A virus infection may not have any signs or symptoms of the disease. Older persons are more likely to have symptoms than children. If symptoms are present, they usually occur abruptly and may include fever, tiredness, loss of appetite, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark urine, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). Symptoms usually last less than 2 months; a few persons are ill for as long as 6 months.
