There are benign breast tumors called fibroadenomas (some women call the "fibroids"), which are part of the fibrocystic tendencies. Uterine fibroids are not related to this condition, to my knowledge.

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomata, are benign growths in the uterus. Fibroids are one of the most common causes of chronic abnormal uterine bleeding.

Recently, I heard you comment on the radio about taking estrogen (Premarin) with citrus juice. Please tell me the point of those comments. A Cancer is less common in communities that eat large amounts of fish, and the reason is thought to be the presence in fish of the long chain omega-3 polyunsaturates. Japanese women, for example, eat a lot of fish, and have a very low rate of breast, (and other) cancer. Men who eat fish frequently have a lower risk of prostate cancer. Stomach and intestinal cancers also appear to be less common in fish eaters.

Most scientists do not believe that hormones cause or initiate cancer, but some hormones may promote cancer growth. This promotion may result in cancer that appears at a younger age than expected, or in a cancer that grows at a faster rate. These findings suggest that chemicals that act like hormones may also promote cancers. In women, estrogen is thought to play a role in the promotion of some forms of breast cancer.

When cancer strikes a family it is not unusual for the primary partners to feel disconnected from one another, their children and other family members. Primary partners may support each other effectively through the initial phases of treatment, but after a while, the stress associated with treatments and its consequences, begins to cause strained relationships. Intimacy and clear communication needs to be reestablished.

The difference between oral hormones and transdermal hormones involves the route of absorption. Oral hormones are absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, and metabolized in the liver. Transdermal hormones, however, are directly absorbed into the blood stream.

Are you confused about hormones and breast cancer? While the relationship between estrogen and breast cancer is not crystal clear, doctors generally agree that estrogen does not cause breast cancer, although it may cause an existing cancer to grow.

Since opening the Institute eight years ago, we have never had a patient return for reccuring fibroids. Our recurrence rates are approximately 1-3% with FAS as compared to 12% to 64% with traditional myomectomy. Because of the surgical technique and laser use the smaller tumors are also removed, unlike a traditional myomectomy. The tumors also do not tend to produce future problems or symptoms necessitating a hysterectomy. We have yet to see a women we were unable to help with FAS.
