What's a dual-layer disc? Will it work in all players?

Hier finden Sie die aktuellen Infos zur DVD Technologie
A dual-layer disc has two layers of data, one of them semi-transparent so that the laser can focus through it and read the second layer. Since both layers are readable from the same side, a dual-layer disc can hold almost twice as much as a single-layer disc, for over 4 hours of video (see 3.3 for more details). Many dual-layer discs are currently available (such as Contact, Goldeneye, Species, Raging Bull, and Rain Man).

What is a dual layer disc?

Frequently Asked Questions
It is a type of DVD with double the storage capacity of standard discs. It contains two recording/ data layers. A transparent spacer is exist between the two recording layers. Semitransparent reflector layer of first recording layer accepts the laser to access data which is then passes to the second layer. Recording of first layer starts from inner edge to outer edge, where as in the second layer it is from outer to inner.

When will double-sided or dual-layer discs appear? Will they work in all players?

alt.video.dvd FAQ
Soon. Some replicators plan to produce double-sided discs, dual-layer discs, and double-dual discs from day one. Obviously the prices will be higher, but certain producers already require more space than is available on a single side or single layer. All players will play dual-layer discs -- it's required. All players will also play double-sided discs if you flip the discs over. No manufacturer has announced a player that will play both sides. (See 2.

Why does this disc work fine on some players, and not others?

CD Quality Control, test and analyse all CD, CD-R and DVD
Typically, this is caused by one or more marginal parameters. Since there are no standards for players, and each player is slightly different, the results will be different on each player. Again, for discs well within specs, this is not a problem. The problem typically arises when one or more parameters are marginal.

When will double-sided, dual-layer discs (DVD-18) be available?

Hier finden Sie die aktuellen Infos zur DVD Technologie
Not as soon as most people hope (including Jim Cameron). DVD-18 technology is not yet out of the laboratory. It requires a completely different way of creating two layers. Single-sided, dual-layer discs are produced by putting one data layer on each substrate and gluing the halves together with transparent adhesive so that the pickup laser can read both layers from one side. But in order to get four layers, each substrate needs to hold two.

What is the recording layer on a DVD-RAM disc?

KODAK:FAQ:KODAK DVD-RAM Media
Phase change material is the recording medium in DVD-RAM discs. The molecules of phase change material can take on two distinct states: amorphous or crystalline. Before recording, the phase change material is in its crystalline state. During recording, the laser quickly heats and then cools the material causing it to become amorphous at the data mark area. When the disc is erased, a lower-powered laser is used to return the surface material to its crystalline state.

What about a PAL-NTSC dual-formatted disc?

It's true, you could make a DVD-10; that is essentially two DVD-5's pressed back-to-back - one PAL, one NTSC, but this gets complicated and adds expense (not as much as making two separate fully-packaged formats, but more than just a simple NTSC DVD-5). Of course if you choose to go DVD-10, you are seriously restricted on the disc artwork, only being about to place small writing around the inner 22mm hole.

Acedge- the only tennis service improvement device - FAQ
Yes. The device has been designed so that a left handed player merely attaches it on the opposite side of the handle from a right handed player. The instruction leaflet is clear on this point.. Games on DVD-9 media are currently unsupported by HDLoader. There are currently under 10 DVD-9 games for the PS2, so hopefully this is not too much of a problem.
