The exchange rate is currently about 6:1, meaning that 6 South African rand are approximately $1 U.S. Some items will seem less expensive than the U.S. counterpart – food oftentimes seems cheaper to us. Other items are at least as expensive as the U.S. equivalent, such as books. You’ll pay for some meals, incidentals, souvenirs, and gratuities (tips). You should anticipate spending about $50 in tips during the trip.

You can exchange in Nepal, primarily in Kathmandu and in Pokhara. We suggest that you bring travelers cheques and some cash for the $30 visa fee at the Kathmandu Airport which you can pay in U.S. dollars or Euros. You can cash your traveler's checks or exchange your paper notes at banks, hotels and tourist stores, airport bank offices, etc. We recommend the exchange of small bills at all times.

Most airlines accept car seats in addition to normal carry on or checked luggage provided approved space is available. When checking your car seat on a US Domestic or International flight you can bring your car seat to the gate to be loaded there. If checking a car seat as luggage the original box/packaging should be used. A liability release form must be signed.

The local currency is the French Pacific Franc or XPF which is tied to the Euro dollar. It is best to change your currency into XPF when you get to Tahiti. Money can be exchanged at one of the two international airport bank exchanges upon arrival, they are open at the times of international arrival and deprture flights. You can also exchange currency later at a bank in Tahiti or on the islands ( banks charge a service fee ).

With CPP, you are guaranteed your original buying exchange rate. Without CPP, you will receive the current day’s selling exchange rate, which is generally 15% lower than the buying rate. Therefore, redeeming CPP always saves you money.

I recommend that you bring a small amount in cash, but that you bring most of your money in the form of travelers’ checks. American Express travelers’ checks are the most widely-accepted in China. Most of our hotels will be able to change money at the front desk, for a small fee. You also can change money at many Bank of China branches, but given our tight schedule it will be more convenient to do it at the hotels.
