Female chickens raised to lay eggs on factory farms live their entire lives in wire cages stacked upon one another. They are packed so tightly together that each hen has only a space about the size of a standard sheet of paper, not even enough room to lift her wings. Confined tightly their entire lives, the chickens often lose most of their feathers rubbing against the wire cage walls.

When buying and handling live chickens, try not to touch them or their droppings. Do not blow at their bottoms. Egg shells may have been contaminated with bird faeces. Wash the outside of eggs and wipe them dry before putting into the refrigerator for storage. Observe food hygiene when cooking chickens and eggs. Always wash your hands thoroughly with liquid soap and water after handling chickens and eggs.

Do not eat raw eggs or dip cooked food into any sauce containing raw eggs. Eggs should be cooked until the white and yolk become firm. Poultry should be cooked thoroughly. The centre of the poultry should reach 70°C continuously for at least two minutes during cooking. If there are pinkish juices running from the cooked poultry or the middle part of its bone is still red in colour, the poultry should be cooked again until fully done.

When your pullets reach about 5-6 months of age, if you will supplement the natural daylight with light bulbs to maintain a 14-17 hour day, you will be very happy with the extra eggs. Birds have a pineal gland behind the eye that controls reproduction. That, of course, is egg production. This switch is turned on and off by the hours of light the birds have each day.

The chicken coop is located just to the north of the lodge, behind the greenhouse. We have brown laying hens only. There is no rooster to wake you up in the morning. If you or your children wish to bring your compost or collect the eggs in the morning, then we welcome you to do so. When you arrive there will be 1 dozen eggs in your fridge. In order to keep them lactating year-round, farmers artificially inseminate dairy cows and force them to give birth every year, which is not their natural behavior. A cow's gestation period is the same as that of a human mother, and each cow is expected to produce milk during seven of her pregnancy's nine months.

Too much lead can harm both children and adults. No one knows exactly how much lead it takes to cause health problems. Many times there are no symptoms until the health problems are very serious. Usually people who are lead poisoned do not seem to be sick. Lead poisoning can cause learning, behavior and health problems in young children. They will eat just about anything! There are commercial poultry foods available at local feed stores, or you can make your own mix. People feed chickens corn, oats, wheat, rye, soy, fresh greens from the garden (weeds as well), table scraps (they love spaghetti!), worms and other bugs. The local grocery stores and markets often have vegetable scraps available. Variety is the key to good health, just like us!

People have died when alternative practitioners told them to stop taking conventional treatment. Children have died when their parents refused to give them conventional treatment.
