This ruling may seem somewhat unfair towards self-published creators, especially with today's improving desktop publishing technology. Unfortunately, CANSCAIP lacks the resources to individually assess a candidate's work. Getting published by a recognized publisher or distributed by a recognized distributor is a reasonably objective benchmark of production and (especially) editorial quality.

We absolutely are interested in helping self-published authors get their book out and into the hands of the public. The fact that your book has been published before and already has a bit of a following is in your favor-not to your detriment.

Authors and illustrators don’t get salaries like “regular business people”. We are paid royalties, which is a percentage of the publisher’s profits. So authors and illustrators are compensated based on how many books are sold, not how long it took to make the book in the first place. An author could work for a year or 10 years on a book, but it all comes down to how well it sells, which is yet another argument for doing your best work.

There have been literally hundreds of authors and illustrators who have been employed by Ladybird Books. The more prolific Ladybird writers include, Vera Southgate, A J MacGregor, Noel Barr, L Du Garde Peach and Sheila McCullagh. The youngest author to write for Ladybird was Jayne Fisher, who at the age of six started her Garden Gang series.

We do consider self-published books in the same manner we consider any other project for placement with a traditional publisher. Resources available to support the CIP program are limited. Recognizing this constraint the CIP program is limited to publishers with an established history of producing works that are widely acquired by the nation's libraries. Such works often include publications produced by small publishers (over 40% of CIP publishers publish less than 5 titles a year), but do not include works of self-publishers.

I could write volumes on this subject. But it basically boils down to a few key items. First: READ. Read everything in the genre you want to write, but don’t limit yourself. Read broadly. The best teacher of writing is a good book. Second: WRITE EVERYDAY. Even if it’s only a few paragraphs, set aside some cracks in time to spoil yourself with the luxury of writing. If you write everyday and read everyday, your own skills will improve constantly.

The IBT authors and instructors have a variety of backgrounds, but they all have extensive experience in their particular subject matter. All of them have many years of private experience in their subject area, as well as spending many years teaching seminars and doing on-site consulting work across the United States.

I will work with writers who intend to self-publish but only if they have writing talent and if the book interests me. I urge writers with talent and interesting material to consider the "traditional" route only.
