Simply speaking 5.1 refers to an industry standard Dolby Digital surround sound system: 5 surround speakers and 1 subwoofer. Each speaker and the sub is controlled separately so when you are watching a movie each speaker runs independently. A 6.1 or 7.1 system simply adds an extra one or two rear speakers to the system.
