Odds are you won't have a natural gas leak in your home; but if you do, your nose will let you know. While natural gas has no odor of its own, Willmut Gas adds an odorant that gives it a distinctive smell (similar to rotten eggs). Adding the odorant is one of the precautions we take to make natural gas the safest energy you can use.

Get everyone out of the house as soon as possible and call 911 from a neighbor's house. Do not turn anything electric on or off. Alert the neighbors and leave the immediate area.

Natural gas is colorless and invisible. When it burns, it should appear as a clear, blue flame. Since natural gas is odorless, a special chemical called Mercaptan is added to make it easy to detect a leak. (Mercaptan smells like a rotten-egg.)

Shortly after the gas release, Union Carbide launched an aggressive effort to identify the cause. An initial investigation by Union Carbide experts showed that a large volume of water had apparently been introduced into the methylisocyanate (MIC) tank. This caused a chemical reaction that forced the pressure release valve to open and allowed the gas to leak. A committee of experts working on behalf of the Indian government conducted its own investigation and reached the same conclusion.

A small leak might be stopped by applying a wet towel with protected (gloved) hands. Larger leaks would be detected by the system and the gas excess flow valve would be activated, shutting off the flow.

Yes, our CSSC and CSSB connectors are approved and listed to ANSI Z21.75/CSA6.27 for manufactured homes. Either series of connectors can be used for crossover connections (one half of the home to the other) or for connecting the home to the exterior gas supply source. However, our gas connectors are not for use with RV's.

If a gas is escaping or an electrical line is penetrated, the excavator is required to notify emergency personnel, notify the operator, and take reasonable steps to minimize hazards to persons and property until either the operator's personnel or emergency first responders arrive on scene. Examples of reasonable steps would be to keep traffic clear of the area where the damage occurred or to evacuate the public in the area.

For most residential homes and small businesses the worst leak you can have is an overflow tube leak in a toilet. This is the worst type of leak because it runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and normally it is a "silent" leak. Unless it is an extremely bad leak you usually cannot hear it running. To determine if you have an overflow tube leak take the top off of your toilet tank and check the water level in the tank.
