The bar and chain require continuous lubrication. Lubrication is provided by the automatic oiler system when the oil tank is kept filled. Lack of oil will quickly ruin the bar and chain. Too little oil will cause overheating shown by smoke coming from the chain and/ or discoloration of the bar. I haven't, but I can't see why plain microwave popped popcorn can't be used, as long as it doesn't have any sort of "butter" flavoring. Personally, I like to use air popped popcorn in recipes. My husband thinks popcorn tastes better when you pop it on the stove in some oil, which does help spices adhere, but can make foods like popcorn balls greasy if you are even a little heavy handed with the oil.
