Teaching Assistant assignments will be made in late August. You will work with a faculty member and your main duty will be to grade assignment papers. Graduate students do not usually teach classes. You will have office hours for undergraduate students to meet with you. A few hours each week will be spent maintaining web pages for faculty.

TAs supervise assignments in small discussion and lab sections of undergraduate courses. GSRs assist faculty members with scholarly research and may or may not collaborate in the publication of research results. All hiring of teaching assistants at UofT is done internally by individual departments. Most graduate departments at the University of Toronto offer new students a teaching assistantship when they are accepted into the department. This is not always the case, however, and no department is required to offer TAships to its students.

The teaching college hires the instructor and pays that instructor according to the contract in place. WAOL reimburses the $40 per credit per enrollment ($200 per enrollment for a five-credit class). The Teaching Institution also informs WAOL about which instructors will be teaching for WAOL each quarter and decides whether a class will be taught or not, based on enrollments one week before the first day of instruction.

Every teacher is provided with a local teaching assistant. They all speak English and help the teacher with conducting the lesson in the first week. They also help out through the term with general administrative support and translate and assist you with any problems you might encounter. In primary (elementary) and in some junior schools a Chinese teaching assistant is assigned for every class you teach.

The first payday is usually September 15th. The second payday is the the last working day of September. The remaining paydays are the last working day of the month.

If your registration fees are to be paid by your department, you may want to defer payment until the funding sources are available. (e.g., stipends, TA fellowships, etc.) Please note: If your graduate award does not include Health Insurance, you must pay it at the time of your payment plan enrollment. If you are paying your registration fees with your teaching assistant salary, you may set up a payment plan to correspond with receipt of your paychecks.

No - all applicants are considered for these positions. Typically half of the incoming class (i.e. around 12 students) are offered TA positions each year. Of these, a few are multi-year TA offers.

No. The TATP is a training programme, not an employment programme. The TATP offers training and support for graduate students, and in some cases undergraduates, who have already been hired as TAs in their own departments, or who know they will be hired in the near future. The TATP is not a career centre and has nothing to do with the hiring of TAs on campus.

Attend all college classes according to the college calendar and all high school classes according to your high school calendar, if you are jointly enrolled (this includes spring break) Arrange for your college grades to be sent to your high school counselor (at the end of each semester)

Answer: Faculty members often employ doctoral students as RA’s on their research projects, and students are strongly encouraged to apply for these positions as they provide excellent experience. These positions vary from year to year, depending on the grant money awarded to faculty members. Teaching assistants (TA’s) help professors by assisting with marking assignments and delivery of some course information. SLAIS does not have such positions at this time

Teaching responsibilities begin one week prior to the start of classes each semester and end on Tuesday after Finals Week.

The ECE department offers two forms of student financial assistance: The research assistant (RA) and the teaching assistant (TA). The RA positions are under control of each individual faculty member. The ECE office does not keep any records on availability. You will need to query each individual faculty member to check on their availability of RA funding.

A teaching assistant is defined as a graduate assistant who spends some of his/her assistantship hours engaged in classroom teaching or other forms of indirect teaching. All new teaching assistants are required to attend this orientation. Attendance for returning graduate teaching assistants who have already attended the previous orientation is recommended but optional.
