This happens on one of my machines, too. Knoppix is NOT trying to hide anything its doing. Its just trying to figure out the "best" way to use your video card. I use the following "cheat-code" so I can watch what's happening. The "=" still resides on the shifted 0 (zero) key at this stage of the boot-up process. You can string several of these "cheat-codes" together, as you need them.

A) The problem may be related to a connector going to the I/O board. In the lower left corner of the board is a male pin connector (J4) labeled "Printer". Check to make sure that nothing is connected to it, or disconnect anything that may be connected to it. Then try turning the game back on and see what happens. In the TV function menu, Media must be set to Cable. After media is set to Cable, an auto scan must be performed. Make sure the audio cable is plugged in to the back of the monitor and in to the Green port in the back of the computer. See similar questions...

When half-Life starts loading, the tools will have already finished their compile. Sounds like your Video card doesn't like running both WC and H-L at once. I suggest running your compiles WITHOUT running the game. EXIT WC after the map compiles. Then run Half-Life with the "-dev -console" parameters (without the quotes). When it loads up, hit the "console" button. Then type in "map mymap" (again without the quotes), where "mymap" is the map filename WITHOUT the .bsp on the end. See similar questions...

You can do that using xscreensaver-command -watch. See the xscreensaver-command manual for an example. This is a bug in the X server, not xscreensaver: the XF86VidModeGetViewPort() function is full of lies, and I don't see any way to work around it. I believe this only happens on certain laptops, and possibly only on systems that have a docking station or external monitor that runs in a different resolution than the laptop's screen. On PCs: Click on the Start button and select Settings and then across to Control Panel. When the window opens, double-click on the Display icon and another window will open. Click on the Settings tab along the top of the window. In the bottom right you'll see an area labeled "Screen area." Click on and move the slider until 800 by 600 appears. This is a known problem with the ATI Mach 64 video card. The problem is that this card uses address 2e8, and the fourth serial port does too. Due to a bug (feature?) in the sio(4) driver it will touch this port even if you do not have the fourth serial port, and even if you disable sio3 (the fourth port) which normally uses this address. Disable sio0, sio1, sio2 and sio3 (all of them). This way the sio driver does not get activated -> no problems. See similar questions...

Your monitor resolution is set larger than the display area of the software. Space Update runs at a resolution of 640x480 pixels, while Earth Update runs at 800x600. To get the software to run full screen adjust your monitor settings in your System's Control Panels. Today, many programmes are produced in a widescreen format with an aspect ratio of 16:9, or are films made in widescreen for the cinema. They are often transmitted in widescreen on digital services. In order to show more of the width of the scene as the director intended, small black bands are placed at the top and bottom of conventional analogue 4:3 aspect ratio screens. Your display settings exceed the capabilities of the LCD monitor. You must reduce the settings. Reconnect the original monitor into the video card and reboot to Windows. Reduce the refresh rate to 60hz and reduce the resolution to 640x480 pixels. Reconnect the LCD monitor back into the video card and boot the computer. You should have a picture at this time.
