OBD stands for On Board Diagnostic. There are 2 versions. OBD-I and OBD-II. In 1970 Congress passed the Clean Air Act and established the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This started a series of graduated emission standards and requirements for maintenance of vehicles for extended periods of time. To meet these standards, manufacturers turned to electronically controlled fuel feed and ignition systems.

The biggest restriction to your flames is the catylitic converter(cat) that is installed on late model cars to burn off excess fuel before it leaves the exaust system, because the flamethrower system relies on unburnt fuel coming out the exaust to create flames the cat may reduce the size of flame you will get. STAINTUNE exhaust systems are not currently equipped with catalytic converters. They have produced prototype catalytic equipped mufflers and systems, but it is not currently a production item. OBD-II is a government mandated diagnostic protocol that is primarily aimed at diagnosing emissions-related problems. An OBD-II scan tool will work in many different brands of cars. VAG-COM uses VW's proprietary diagnostic protocol and will only work in VW/Audi vehicles. Pre-OBD-II cars had connectors in various positions under the dashboard and under the hood. All OBD-II cars have a connector located in the passenger compartment easily accessible from the driver's seat. Check under the dash or behind or near the ashtray. Please note that in the UK from 1st January 1996 the MOT has included an emissions test for vehicles equipped with three way catalytic converters. Cars registered after 1st August 1992 (i.e. K prefixes onwards) are required by law to have catalytic converters fitted and will fail the test without them. The Chevrolet Cavalier Z24/Pontiac Sunfire GT header is sold only as a complete unit, including the catalytic converter. Because GM manufactured the original parts with the catalytic converter welded to the down pipe, it is a violation of US Federal law to sell a header and down pipe assembly without a catalytic converter as part of the assembly.
