What is the difference between an OBD-I Catalytic Converter and an OBD-II Catalytic Converter?

Frequently asked questions
OBD stands for On Board Diagnostic. There are 2 versions. OBD-I and OBD-II. In 1970 Congress passed the Clean Air Act and established the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This started a series of graduated emission standards and requirements for maintenance of vehicles for extended periods of time. To meet these standards, manufacturers turned to electronically controlled fuel feed and ignition systems.

What about the catalytic converter?

Zorst Flamethrowers
The biggest restriction to your flames is the catylitic converter(cat) that is installed on late model cars to burn off excess fuel before it leaves the exaust system, because the flamethrower system relies on unburnt fuel coming out the exaust to create flames the cat may reduce the size of flame you will get. What is the OBD-II test?

Frequently Asked Questions
OBD stands for On-Board Diagnostics and this is the second generation of this technology. Starting in 1996, all vehicles sold in the United States were required to include this technology. It requires a computer on board the vehicle that monitors the engine and power train systems and logs any problems that could cause the vehicle's emissions to increase. A failed OBD-II test means that there is a problem with the vehicle. See similar questions...

What is OBD II?

State of Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles
OBD is short for "On-Board-Diagnostic" and simply refers to those systems that are controlled or incorporated into the new automobile computers to monitor or control systems that affect the vehicle emissions. The Clean Air Act of 1970 established the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and several graduated emission standards were established over time. Vehicle manufacturers eventually turned to electronics to control the fuel and ignition systems to meet the standards. See similar questions...

Q - And my car has a catalytic converter, what now ?

JDS Porsche MAF Airflow Calibration & Repair
A - An oxygen sensor which monitors the exhaust gases before the catalytic converter feeds a signal back to the LH computer, forming a closed loop system.- a "lambda control loop". This loop adjusts the amount of fuel injected, keeping the air/fuel ratio within the very narrow limits required in order to meet emissions standards. The cat can be contaminated by an incorrect fuel/air ratio, so this feedback loop is essential. See similar questions...

What's the difference between VAG-COM and an OBD-II Scan-Tool?

Ross-Tech: VAG-COM: FAQ Page 1
OBD-II is a government mandated diagnostic protocol that is primarily aimed at diagnosing emissions-related problems. An OBD-II scan tool will work in many different brands of cars. VAG-COM uses VW's proprietary diagnostic protocol and will only work in VW/Audi vehicles. Although you can use an OBD-II Scan Tool in an OBD-II compliant (1996 or newer) VW or Audi, an OBD-II Scan Tool can only talk to the engine, not the numerous other "intelligent" systems in the car. FAQ:About OBD-II - MP3Car.com
All cars built since January 1, 1996 have OBD-II systems. Manufacturers started incorporating OBD-II in various models as early as 1994. Some early OBD-II cars were not 100% compliant. There are three basic OBD-II protocols in use, each with minor variations on the communication pattern between the on-board diagnostic computer and the scanner console or tool.
