Can I give a PPD (tuberculin skin test) on the same day as a dose of MMR vaccine?

Vaccines: VDP-VAC/Combined/MMR/Clinical FAQs
A PPD can be applied before or on the same day that MMR vaccine is given. However, if MMR vaccine is given on the previous day or earlier, the PPD should be delayed for at least one month. Live measles vaccine given prior to the application of a PPD can reduce the reactivity of the skin test because of mild suppression of the immune system. There is no scientific reason for or benefit to separating the antigens.

What is the tuberculin skin test?

Hawaii State Department of Health - www.hawaii.gov/health
The tuberculin skin test tells if TB germs are in the body. A small amount of harmless fluid will be put just under the skin on your arm. Two or three days later you must return to the clinic to have your arm checked for a reaction. (The skin test must be repeated if you are not able to return to the clinic within 3 days.) If there is a reaction, the size of the reaction is measured. See similar questions...

What do the tuberculin skin test results mean?

Hawaii State Department of Health - www.hawaii.gov/health
If there is little or no change to the spot on your arm, it usually means that TB germs have not entered your body. This is called a negative reading, and you will be given a TB clearance card. If a bump about the size of a pencil eraser or bigger appears on your arm, this means that you probably are infected with TB germs. It is a positive reading, but it does not necessarily mean that you have TB disease. See similar questions...

Do we know why so many cases have had MMR vaccine?

Mumps FAQ
Yes, some of the reported cases are in individuals that have been vaccinated with two doses of MMR. The vaccine effectiveness for 1 dose of MMR is 70-80% and 80-90% for 2 doses. Since no vaccine is 100% effective (even though people are vaccinated, the vaccine doesn't 'take' in every person), it is to be expected that there will be some cases of disease in individuals that have been vaccinated. However, the vaccine is likely to have prevented hundreds or thousands of other cases. See similar questions...
