A pharmacy technician has numerous responsibilities both behind the counter and on the floor of both retail and hospital pharmacies. Some of a pharmacy technician’s duties might include preparing prescription labels, pricing and filling prescriptions, establishing and maintaining patient profiles, preparing insurance claim forms, and stocking and taking inventory of prescription and over-the-counter medications.

Pharmacy technicians generally work in clean, organized, well-lighted and well-ventilated areas in retail and mail-order pharmacies or hospitals. Most of their workdays are spent on their feet, and they may be required to lift heavy boxes or use stepladders to retrieve supplies from high shelves. Technicians work the same hours as pharmacists, which may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays.

OSU does not offer a pharmacy technician program. Several Oregon and Washington colleges have pharmacy technician programs, including Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Ore.; Linn Benton Community College in Albany, Ore.; and Clark College in Vancouver, Wash.; Apollo College in Portland, Ore., also has a pharmacy technician program.

The pharmacist in charge is responsible for compliance with the technician provisions. The technician ratio of pharmacy technicians to pharmacists in the prescription area of any pharmacy is two to one. However, it may be three to one if at least two of the pharmacy technicians have a current certification issued by either PTCB or ICPT (ExCPT – Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians ). National Certification is not required unless you want to use the 3 to 1 ratio.

Application fees are listed on the application. To register, applicants will be required to pay an $85.00 application fee to PCS. Applicants will also be required to pay a Board Registration fee (to be established by the Executive Office of Administration and Finance: estimated to be in the range of $25.00 to $38.00). All fees will be payable to PCS.A Board renewal fee will be required every two years after the initial registration period on the birthdate of the applicant.

Diving Medicine is a specialized area of medical science dealing with the biological effects of the undersea environment on health and safety. In addition to treating diving injuries, a diving physician must also make decisions regarding the "fitness" of an individual to dive. A number of courses in diving medicine are offered each year that allow physicians and other professionals the opportunity to stay current in diving medical issues.

The Pharmacy has a full range of prescription drugs. We also carry a large selection of over-the-counter products such as cold, allergy and first-aid medications. You can fill prescriptions written by one of our Health Center providers or by an outside provider.

If the application is compete and no further information is requested by PCS, applicants should be mailed a notice of eligibility within five-ten business days of application and a wallet registration card within four to six weeks of approval.

Yes. Successful graduates are eligible to write both the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam (U.S.A.) and the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board exam (Alberta). Yes, Hospital Practicum's are available for students meeting specified criteria. Since 1993 West Coast College students have been accepted into Hospital Pharmacies in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario.

The average income for pharmacy technicians employed by retail pharmacies is approximately $10.54 per hour. However, this number includes individuals without formal training. Pharmacy technician certification increases the chances of starting at a higher average rate of $12.32 per hour.

Anyone can become a technician by attending training and purchasing equipment, however, since these are Class II medical devices they must be used under the supervision of a licensed medical practitioner (Doctors, Naturopaths, Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, etc.). It is best to be aligned with a medical practitioner prior to becoming trained. The Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse devices create a powerful new income stream for any medical practice.

Lab technicians work in commercial laboratories with 2 to 10 technician, private dental offices, manufacturing companies, hospitals, self-employed. Some very large laboratories hire as many as 1,000 technicians.

The Health Center carries a supply of various medications including antibiotics and over the counter medications. The Rose Hill campus works closely with Mt. Carmel Pharmacy (718) 364-6100, for our other pharmacy needs. Mt. Carmel pharmacy is located on 705 East 187th Street in the Bronx and can deliver prescription medications to your dorm room.

There are so many options with a Pharm.D. degree. You can go into pharmaceuticals, business, research, outpatient or in-patient services. The list is really endless! There's also less schooling (4 vs. 8 years for med school) and you still get a doctor's degree. Moreover, there is less stress (no HMO's to worry about), flexible hours (time for family, travelling, etc), great pay, and an opportunity to work with and counsel people.

Applying to take the PTCB is not considered to be enrollment in a Board approved training program. You may not work as a pharmacy technician unless you are registered or enrolled in a Board approved training program (see above). If you want to work while waiting to take the PTCB, you must be enrolled in an approved program.
