Class standing is not based on how many years you have been attending, but is based on number of credits you have COMPLETED. You are a freshman if you have completed less than 30 credits, a sophomore if you have 30-59 credits, a junior if you have 60-89 credits, and a senior if you have over 90 credits.

The number of credits completed determines your class standing in the College of Letters and Science. The Letters and Science requirements extend well beyond the minimum University requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements. Therefore, a student may have General Education requirements complete, but may have several Letters and Science requirements left to fulfill. Degree requirements vary depending upon when you began college for the first time.

Begin exploring your career options and gaining experiences as early as possible to help you position yourself best to achieve your post-graduation plans. a freshman or sophomore, prepare yourself to gain experience by meeting professionals in your field and becoming engaged in activities. Although you may not be able to obtain academic credit for internships as a freshman or sophomore, you will find that opportunities for experience still exist.

A student becomes a sophomore by earning 45 credit hours; a junior by earning 90 credit hours; and a senior by earning 135 credit hours.

I have completed two semesters. Shouldn’t I be a sophomore if it is my second year? Registration

No. Of course we would love to have you starting your freshman year; the more time you are attending classes at NESA, the more you will get out of the program. We accept students entering 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades.

SPEA does not require a foreign language for either the BSPA or BSPH degrees. For BSES students, eight hours of a foreign language is required for degree completion.

Per the catalog, freshmen are defined as “Students who have earned fewer than 25 semester credit hours. Sophomores are defined as “Students who have earned 25-54 semester credit hours.” Juniors are defined as “Students who have earned 55-88 semester credit hours.” Seniors are defined as “students who have earned 89 or more semester hours.”

Majors (academic programs) in APEX are starting with Catalog Year FALL 2004 (i.e. UK Bulletin 2004-2005). If you are a sophomore, junior or senior, the courses required for your major might have changed and therefore your APEX audit would not be correct. Specific courses required for your major would be in editions of the UK Bulletin prior to FALL 2004.

Your class standing is determined by the number of transferable hours presented at the end of the regular academic year (not including summer sessions immediately prior to enrollment) prior to the fall semester you wish to enroll. A student with 30 to 59 transferable hours will receive sophomore standing. A student with 60 to 90 transferable hours will be considered a junior. If you have fewer than 30 transferable hours, you will be classified as a transfer student with freshman standing.

Answer: The Stony Brook ATP is structured so that the application process is completed during the spring semester of sophomore year, however a junior or senior-level student may apply when the required prerequisite coursework is completed.

All academic scholarship recipients are expected to maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA to renew their scholarship each year. Leadership scholarship recipients must maintain a 2.5 GPA. Music scholarship recipients must achieve a 2.5 overall GPA and a 3.0 in their applied music field.

We feel that students who have completed at least two years of undergraduate education will be better prepared to fully take advantage of the opportunities in this program. We also understand that there may be exceptionally talented and qualified first year students, but this would be an exception rather than the rule. If you have questions, please contact us.

During the middle years of your college experience, you will need to consider several important issues. You need to decide upon a major, begin to develop career goals and/or explore interest in graduate or professional school education. At each advising session you may request a degree summary sheet which lists all of the requirements you need to fulfill in order to graduate. Absolutely. Some students become aware of the PA profession after declaring majors in other fields. These students must realize that if admitted to the PA program, they become biomedical sciences majors and must complete their undergraduate requirements before beginning PA studies.

The junior/senior check is your opportunity to meet with an Academic Advisor to review the requirements you have already completed and identify the requirements you have yet to complete. The Academic Advisor will review your complete transcript with you to ensure that you are on track to complete all graduation requirements. We recommend that you have a junior check in the spring of your junior year and a senior check in the fall of your senior year.
