A shaded mark is pressed into the dandy roll cover. When the fibers flow into the depressed area of the design, that area becomes more opaque than the surrounding area of the sheet. For a wire mark, the design is raised on the dandy roll cover. The raised mark then presses into the fibers and displaces some of the paper fibers.
