Canine osteoarthritis (or "dog arthritis") is a chronic disease that causes degeneration of the joints, resulting in pain, inflammation and reduced mobility. It can affect any joint in your dog's body.

During the last 30 years, the capture and study of free-ranging dogs in remote areas of South Carolina and Georgia has revealed the existence of dogs of primitive appearance fitting the typical long-term pariah (i.e, primitive/dingo) morphotype.

To truly control your dog's arthritis, you have to look at the big picture. If he is overweight, that's not helping. Be sure to put him on a weight control diet. Also, provide him with controlled exercise which is essential to facilitate adequate supply of nutrition to the joint tissues. And, as soon as arthritis is diagnosed, ask your veterinarian for Adequan® Canine (POLYSULFATED GLYCOSAMINOGLYCAN).

The Carolina Dog Association has been inundated with correspondence from people who think their dog may be a Carolina Dog. Many of these dogs were adopted from animal shelters or picked up as strays, and their origins are unknown. Petting is a distraction to the dog when it is working; therefore, it is important to always ask the blind person's permission before touching a guide dog.

Guide dogs undergo a comprehensive training program, and only the best of the best complete the training and become working guides. In short, guide dogs are taught how to find and follow a clear path, maneuver around obstacles, and stop at curbs. They follow their teammate's directions, and they know that they can disobey only in the face of danger.

The general rule is that working guide dogs should be ignored. Distractions take their concentration away from the work they have to do—which can put the dog and its teammate in jeopardy. Do not pet or feed a guide dog and do not encourage the dog to misbehave. Dogs are evaluated for service as Guides, Service, Therapy, Companion or Detector Dogs.

The harness tells you. When a guide dog is wearing a harness, it means they're working. Even if they are sitting quietly under a table, they're at work. And you shouldn't pet or talk to them.

G.D.A. has a new Whelping /Breeding facility lovingly called the Puppy Nursery. The puppies are born in this facility and will remain there until they are eight weeks old. At eight weeks old the pups are placed with pre-screened, volunteer foster families, called Puppy Raisers, who provide care that is necessary for the development of future guide dogs.

The most common dog allergy is itching of the skin.
