Yes, although painted Formica will no longer serve as an appropriate surface for chopping and other rough use. Formica should be thoroughly washed with powdered detergent, and then primed with XIM - UMA Primer (according to instructions on container). XIM Primer is available through most good independent paint merchants, or can be ordered from Phillips. After allowing the UMA primer to dry for 3 or 4 hours it should be sanded glass-smooth with a very fine paper - 220 or higher.

Use a perforating or scoring tool on the entire area. Wet the surface with mixed solution lightly several times. Keep the entire area wet, waiting 10 to 15 minutes between soakings. Scrape an area and re-wet any dry areas. It is recommended that you scrape one area while soaking another area. Work left and right, up and down, back and forth between areas. Logs should only be stained and sealed. Today there is a rich selection of stains available from many manufacturers. It is highly recommended that you treat logs ONLY with stains designed for log homes. It is a fallacy that any "old" deck or house stain will do. If properly stained, sealed and maintained logs will look and last for generations. The first enemy of logs is sunshine followed by water. The painted lampshades are made from natural colored, undyed cotton canvas. The "natural" canvas is a light, off white. I know that in some of the pictures, the canvas looks white (forest mist, for example), and in others it looks sort of a tan color (like on the aspens).
