How do I make my hard disk bootable with FreeDOS, after installing FreeDOS?

If you have any questions, please contact the FD-DOC coordin...
The short answer is to boot from the FreeDOS Install Boot Floppy. When your system comes up, just type: After that's done, remove the floppy from the A: drive, and reboot. Your system is now running FreeDOS.

Can you provide a bootable disk image?

Mini vMac FAQ
No. This would require Apple System Software, involving issues similar to those mentioned above for ROM images. Except that System Software may be downloaded freely from Apple. Maybe someday. The next computer that I plan to emulate is the Mac II, which has color. (See bounties) Meanwhile, you could try Basilisk II. It might be possible to hack the ROM of the Mac Plus to support larger screen sizes.

Why can't I use my large hard disk with FreeDOS?

If you have any questions, please contact the FD-DOC coordin...
The FreeDOS kernel (even as late as build 2017f) still contains the bug for 512MB disks. Do not use this kernel if you plan to access - even read - a disk partition bigger than 512MB. If you do, you will find that your drive is corrupt, and you will need to reformat and re-install your software. This is a well-known bug with large hard disks, advertised on the FreeDOS sites since Aug 12 1998. The reason for the delay in releasing the new kernel is that I'm trying to track down a serious bug.

I have single partitioned hard disk which is not bootable as well, can I recover my files from it?

File Recovery Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ
File recovery becomes instantly more difficult in this case. Most recovery programs will need a place to copy recovered data, and if you are using the same drive which has the lost data on it you have no guarantee that you will not be destroying more data than you save. It's a far better idea to either install a new hard drive onto the current system and put a new OS on that, or find another computer to transfer the lost hard drive to. This Scenario can be very difficult to deal.

Can I transfer your sounds to computer hard disk myself, or have it done for me?

Sound Ideas - Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, provided that you own the Sound Ideas products that you want to transfer. If you are setting up a multi-user audio production environment, you need a license from Sound Ideas. Our Hard Disk Information Sheet has been designed to provide full details about this license. If you decide to sell your hard drive at a later date, however, ALL Sound Ideas audio files MUST be removed from the disc before you transfer ownership.

Why is floppy disk access is so slow under FreeDOS?

If you have any questions, please contact the FD-DOC coordin...
It's actually very simple. I originally wrote the code as part of a real-time os. That os had disk drivers that worked with dma and were multitasking. So, I took advantage of it and only did all my reads and writes out of the disk buffers. The next sector was always set for read-ahead so that while I was reading or writing the current sector, the next one was filling the buffer. For the bios drivers, I need to specifically fetch each sector and wait until it finishes.

How can I save map data on the hard disk and make use of it?

EADS N.V. - FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions
First, create a folder on the hard drive e.g. “D:\Data\Top50”, then copy the entire content of the CD. If you have not yet installed the program, start Setup from the CD and follow the instructions there. The Geogrid Logo appears and a message is displayed alerting you to the fact that the map drive was not found. Now open the item “Directories” in the “Settings” menu and add the new pathway (e.g. D:\Daten\Top50).

What if I Only Have an Image of the Bootable Partition and Not the Entire Disk?

Live View - FAQ
No problem. Live View will automatically detect this and build a Master Boot Record for your partition allowing it to boot. Yes, simply select all of the chunks in the browse dialog by using Ctrl + Click. Live View sorts the chunks by their file extensions so be sure that the chunks have either numerically or alphabetically ordered file extensions. I want to make my USB flash drive bootable, what steps are required for this process?

Removable Media Recovery Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ
Most laptops now use lithium ion (LiIon) batteries. LiIons should be managed differently from the NiCad or NiMH batteries used in older laptops. In particular, LiIons should not be run all the way down to prevent "memory effect". First, they don't have a memory effect, and second, running them down tends to reduce their capacity. If the laptop does not need the battery it should be run to about 40% charge and stored in a cool place.

Click-and-hold with the mouse over the image, you should get a pop-up menu with "Save Image As..." as an option. What happens in the event of a hard disk drive failure?

Kaleidescape - FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Although Kaleidescape uses high quality hard disk drives, drives do fail occasionally. On average, drives in Kaleidescape Systems fail at a rate of one or two percent per year. To prevent loss of information from a drive failure, every Kaleidescape Server uses RAID-K to store redundant information. The 3U Server also features a Hot Spare Disk Cartridge as an additional measure of data protection.

What should I do if hard disk drive fails in my Kaleidescape System?

Kaleidescape - FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
When a hard disk drive fails in a Kaleidescape System, you will still be able to enjoy all the Movies and Music in your library, but the System will not be able to import CDs or DVDs. Your Kaleidescape System will also be vulnerable to losing data from a second disk drive failure, until the first failed disk drive has been replaced and the data on it rebuilt. If you suspect that a disk drive has failed, then always call Kaleidescape Technical Support first.

How can you copy a Macrovision-protected DVD onto a hard disk?

Kaleidescape - FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Macrovision is a copy protection technology that applies to the analog video outputs of DVD players. Kaleidescape has a Macrovision license and our products have been tested and approved by Macrovision Corporation. That license and certification enable Kaleidescape to apply the Macrovision copy protection technology to a Movie Player's analog video outputs. This has nothing to do with making a digital copy of the information on a DVD disc.

What is FreeDOS?

If you have any questions, please contact the FD-DOC coordin...
The goal of the FreeDOS Project is to create a free implementation of MS-DOS. DOS is a popular system, and there is plenty of hardware out there that supports DOS. The FreeDOS Project was founded in 1994 by Jim Hall. FreeDOS is not a derivation of MS-DOS - we are not using or referring to any Microsoft code. We are instead using the description of the MS-DOS program as given in publications (such as the user manual) to create a program of our own that follows that spec.

How do I make hard disk partitions auto-mountable?

DebianLive/FAQ - Debian Wiki
The following instructions have been tested in KDE. They should also work for Gnome as well, to the extent that it uses HAL in the same way as KDE! To allow harddrive partitions to appear in the KDE media:/ ioslave, one simply needs to remove a file installed by the hal package: # rm -f chroot/usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/debian-storage-policy-fixed-drives.fdi The ability to mount NTFS read-write using media:/ _almost_ works.

Can I remove a Disk Cartridge of a failed hard drive before I receive the replacement?

Kaleidescape - FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
Kaleidescape recommends that all Disk Cartridges should be left in the Server until the replacement Disk Cartridge has arrived.
