Is your monitor set to display more than 256 colors? Take a look at the two pictures above: if they look the same to you, there is a good chance that your monitor is not set up to display more than 256 colors. On the Macintosh, use the Monitors & Sounds control panel to configure for thousands or millions of colors. In Windows, right-click on the desktop, select Properties from the pop-up menu, and choose the Settings tab.

You've probably set your video display to use only 256 colors (8 bits per pixel). For the best appearance, set your video display to use thousands or millions of colors (16 or 24 bits per pixel).

The ImmerVision PurePlayer viewer automatically downsizes the image if your computer has insufficient free memory to display the full size image. Check that you do not have multiple panoramas open at once, or other Java applets open on other websites. When you open the panorama in a window you get a lower resolution version of the panorama - you can click the button to view full-screen, but the image may look pixelated.

Change your computer display's video settings to show High Color or True Color (more than 256 colors). Refer to the documentation that came with your computer or to the Windows help system (search for help on Display, Color Resolution or Color Depth) for further details about changing the Display settings for your computer. If you have noticeable grain or speckles on your film-derived prints it’s very probable that your negatives are highly underexposed (ie: they were not exposed to sufficient light). When photo printing machines encounter underexposed negatives they tend to boost the brightness to compensate, which tends to reveal bad speckly grain. Take a look at your negatives by holding them up to the light. If they seem very transparent and light then they’re underexposed.

This website is optimized for computer monitors displaying at least 800 by 600 pixels at 24 bit color (16.7 million colors). On a Windows-based computer, you may change your display settings by going to the Start menu and choosing Control Panel --> Display --> Settings. This is a problem at low light levels, and may be also due to subtle bugs in the code. The cause is most likely the OV7610 settings we are currently using. I am looking into this problem. Some of this is caused by the older technologies and manufacturing processes used in the OV7610 and OV7620AE. The OV7620 is much better about this.

My Sony Mavica tends to flash a red light when it takes a picture. Therefore, some of the shiny surfaces tend to reflect in the final photo. However, I don't do any retouching. All photos are as the camera took them.

Are you by any chance using AOL? The AOL software has a configuration setting that causes it to only download parts of images. Another parameter limits the number of colors to 256, regardless of the way your monitor is set up. Check the software's preferences to make sure it is configured to download high-quality images at more than 256 colors.

If you're using America Online, you probably have image compression turned on. Although this makes the photos download faster, it drastically reduces their quality. Consult the America Online instructions and turn off image compression to see the photos at full sharpness. (If these words look blurry also, consider buying a new monitor or consulting an eye doctor.)

Simple close-up photos of the child generally work best. Both color and black and white look great, and we've seen some treated with sepia tones that also work well.

Because of the skinnable nature of Cyberscore, images used around the site have to be flexible to ensure maximum quality on a range of background colours and images. For this reason, PNG images with alpha transparency are being used in various parts of the site. Unfortunately, Internet Explorer does not fully support this feature of the PNG file format at present, so it shows a background on the image when it loads.
