Anemia, an abnormally low level of red blood cells, is a common complication of cancer and treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Both cancer and its treatment can interfere with the supply of red blood cells - by inhibiting the production of bone marrow, or as a result of chronic blood loss during surgery. Although it is seldom life-threatening, cancer-related anemia can cause overwhelming fatigue, and may have a severe impact on quality of life.

Pregnancy places major demands on the body, because the mother must meet the needs of both her body and her growing baby. The body needs enough iron and folate to make the right amount of red blood cells. To prevent anemia during pregnancy, the expectant mother should stay in close contact with her doctor, and be sure to eat a diet that includes foods rich in iron and folate, like liver and dark green leafy vegetables.

It is rarely possible to find the cause of a cancer in an individual, but studies on groups of people with cancer have shown specific risk factors to be associated with specific cancers. This suggests that different types of cancer probably have different causes. These studies also indicate that cancer formation is a multi-step process, and that for most cancers the time from a cancer-causing exposure to a clinically diagnosable cancer averages about 20 years.

There are a number of different types of anemia and the symptoms will vary by type. In general, potential causes include a number of disease such as heart disease, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and cancer; inflammatory disease like rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel syndrome; and a number of other conditions such as excessive blood loss, nutritional deficiencies, adverse reactions to certain medications, chemotherapy, and certain problems affecting bone marrow.

But before you can act to counter fatigue, there’s an important concept you must understand about it. Not all fatigue is alike. I think everyone is familiar with general physical fatigue, and that’s certainly a major component in the equation for the cancer patient.

No, we do not. In 1988, a definitive study by Straus, et al., in the News England Journal of Medicine (Vol. 319, No. 26, pages 1692-1698) showed no link between Epstein-Barr virus and "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome." To date, no infectious agent has been substantially shown to be the cause of "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome." Hence, we do not follow patients with this disorder in our clinic.

Their muscles lack the glucose necessary for ATP production. Note: since little glucose is available to start with, glycolysis does not form lactate in large quantity. Therefore muscle fatigue is not the result of lactic acid buildup. This is a common misconception about McArdle's Disease.

Fatigue, feeling tired and lacking energy, is the most common symptom reported by cancer patients. The exact cause is not always known. It may be due to the disease itself or to treatment. It may also result from lowered blood counts, lack of sleep, pain and poor appetite. Most people begin to feel tired after a week or two of radiation therapy. During radiation therapy, the body uses a lot of energy for healing.

Colorectal cancer is caused by genetic changes that occur in the cells lining the large intestine. These changes occur slowly over time, and usually form a polyp before a frank cancer develops. While we cannot yet change genes to prevent colon cancer, screening for colorectal cancer can detect earlier cancers or allow your doctor to remove polyps, so that they cannot become cancers.

Doctors do not know exactly what causes breast cancer. But some things are known to increase the chance that you will get it. These are called risk factors. The main risk factors for breast cancer include:1 Aging. Most breast cancer occurs in women older than 50, and the risk is greatest in women older than 60.2 Family history of breast cancer. You have a higher risk if a close family member, especially your mother or sister, has had breast cancer. Female hormones.

The exact cause of most colorectal cancers is not yet known. About 75% of colorectal cancers occur in people with no known risk factors. There are some known factors that may increase a person's risk of developing colorectal cancer, which include: Genetic syndromes such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer (HNPCC). (Just 5% of colorectal cancers are linked to these genetic syndromes.)

Little is really known about what causes each of the various types of childhood cancer. Research so far as not been able to tell us why certain children develop cancer and others don't. What is known is that chromosome disorders account for most leukemias. High levels of exposure to radiation, such as the use of X-rays during pregnancy have been linked with one or more childhood cancers. And children with Down Syndrome are known to be at higher risk of developing leukemia.

Aplastic Anemia may be caused by injury to the bone marrow by radiation, chemicals, various medications, viruses, immune diseases, pregnancy, insecticides and pesticides. It is important to realize that bone marrow failure is a very rare response to a wide variety of possible causative factors to which we are all commonly exposed. In most cases of Aplastic Anemia, we do not find any link with environmental factors.

The fatigue treatment guidelines for patients developed by the NCCN and distributed by the American Cancer Society give some very sound advice about having the conversation. First, remember that the best measure of fatigue is your own description of it to your health care team. There’s no lab test for it.To help you describe your fatigue, you might try using a scale of 0 to 10, with 0 = no fatigue and 10 = the worst you can imagine.

Currently, no missions have flown with a cancer-bearing patient. However, scientists have conducted preliminary studies on the effects of exposure to radiation in space. Since high levels of radiation are known to cause higher-than-normal mutation rates (which can lead to cancer) within a living cell, the levels of cosmic radiation experienced outside of Earth's protective atmosphere will be a large concern in the coming era of longer manned spaceflights.

Though most hospice patients come from cancer-related illnesses, there are many other diagnoses that qualify for hospice care once they reach an end-stage prognosis (life expectancy of 6 months or less). Among those are: Insurance coverage for hospice is available through Medicare and in 80% of states in the U.S. under Medicaid. In addition, most private insurance plans, HMOs, and other managed care organizations include hospice care as a benefit.
