You need to be able to establish outgoing connections on ports 4038 and 4039. For optimal performance, you need both incoming and outgoing connectivity on port 4137. You may not change the ports that BitWise uses. Allowing different ports would substantially detract from the ease of communication among BitWise users.

The short answer: BitWise uses encryption on all messages and files sent between you and your contacts; this includes whiteboards, shared file lists, and chat rooms. You can verify the encryption by using a packet sniffer on yourself to watch your network traffic. The main port used by P2P-Radio is the port 2000 (UDP & TCP). This port must be accessible from the Internet. The port 2001 (TCP) is used for communicating with your media player. Very basically, if you have a low ID, it means that computers can't connect directly to you from the internet, and that your machine needs to initiate all connections outward. This is caused by either a firewall, a router that doesn't know what to do with incoming connections, or a bad server, and means that the server you are connected to needs to tell you when someone wants you, and you have to then connect to them, rather than having them connect directly to you.

Some ISP's throttle bandwidth on these ports, and some trackers have banned them because of that. So choose a port of your own between 20,000 and 60,000. In order to change the port all you need to do is choose a port number that is not black listed and enter it in your router.
