Can a file deleted on a netware drive be un-deleted?

Computing Services Main FAQs
Yes. On most Netware servers deleted files are kept for at least 8 days before they are purged. Note that it is only deleted files that are kept. If you overwrite a file you will not be able to recover this file using the method below. To salvage(un-delete) a file in your personal directory open up Windows Explorer and go to the U: drive and then the first letter of your last name. If you deleted files in a sub-directory, navigate to the directory containing that sub-directory.

I deleted a file on my J: drive, but it's not in the recycle bin. Where did it go?

Math Department Computing FAQ
It's gone. The recycle bin works only for local files (meaning those on the local drive, usually c:). This is by design, so if this design decision bothers you, please complain to Microsoft, not me.

What if I recover deleted file to the same hard drive where it was located? Are there any risks?

RAID Data Recovery and NTFS Recovery
OS considers deleted files as just free space on the drive, so with any write operations to that partition or disk here is always the probability of loosing these files forever by overwriting them. Restorer2000 performs write operations in cases saving recovered files and images. Therefore it's not recommended to restore files or an image into the same partition. In case of recovering a physical drive you must recover and save the information to another physical hard drive.

When I delete a document/file from my hard drive is it really deleted and unretrievable?

Security Awareness Hardware FAQ
The DOS and Windows commands to delete files do not delete the data from your hard drive. They merely delete their own record of the fact that the area of the disk they occupy is unavailable to other uses. Consequently, the undelete commands merely have to change the character back to restore the data, as is demonstrated retrieving deleted files from the Windows recycle bin. Contrary to popular belief, reformatting the hard drive does not affect the disk data.

I cannot find my deleted file. Why?

Data recovery software - Power Recovery Software v5.5
If you deleted the file in the Recycle Bin or emptied the Recycle Bin, refer to File System Issues for more information. If your file cannot be found during find operation, the deleted file/directory may be still on disk but is no longer referenced by an existing folder. In this case you will need to run the 'Find lost data' search. In the case this process does not find your file you may need to run the 'Full scan/ find format' search. See the User Guide for more information.

Can I retrieve a backup of the file(s) I just accidentally deleted?

DCF FAQ
If you accidently delete a file and want to check if that file was saved on the incremental backup disk you can run "getback". For example, user 'someone' accidently removed the file 'foo' from ~/bar directory: If 'foo' is in the listing then it can be retrieved by executing 'getback foo'. If not then send mail to help and request that the file ~/bar/foo be restored from the latest fulldump tape. (Please remember to give the complete path- name of the file(s)).

My netware drive space is full and deleting files isn't helping - how do I free up space?

Computing Services Main FAQs
Most directories provided on Novell Netware file servers(H:/I:/T: etc.) have a space quota placed on them to prevent these shared disks from being filled up. With files stored on netware volumes, deleted files aren't immediately cleared until after 8 days so as to allow files that are accidentally deleted(a common occurence) to be salvaged. To purge deleted files in your personal directory, open up Windows Explorer and go to the U: drive and then the first letter of your last name.

Why doesn't source control detect that I have deleted a file/folder on my local disk?

Jim Lamb : Team Foundation Server FAQ
The main scenario here is deleting a file (by mistake or intentionally) outside of Team Foundation and then trying the get that file back from source control. If the file version has not changed the server thinks the user already has the file and does not copy it over. This is because the server keeps a list of files that the user already has and when activities are made outside of source control this list becomes out of date.

If I deleted a file by mistake, can I get it back?

Ob/Gyn Department - IT Support
Perhaps. It depends on how much time has elapsed since the file was deleted. If the folder was on a local hard drive, it might be in the Recycle Bin, where you can right-click on it and Choose restore. If it's on the network, it's possible that System Administration can recover it from the backup tape. You'll need to tell us the name of the file and the date of the nightly backup you want it recovered from.

I accidentally deleted a file. Can I recover it?

Backups are performed nightly after hours. In order for your file to have been backed up, it must have existed at least over night so it was saved to tape. If this was the case, email clue@iastate.edu, and give us the full path to the file that you deleted, and the time that you deleted it so we can grab the latest version.

What happens when a file is deleted in iFolder?

Little Networks FAQ
The file is deleted from your local machine, which is then synchronized to the server, and finally synchronized to any other machines that you may log in to with the iFolder client. If you accidentally deleted the file, you can either undelete from the trash bin (also known as the conflict bin) or connect to the iFolder server using a browser and download the file. Be careful not to use the iFolder client to connect, or it will delete the file from the server.

I deleted one file, is there "undelete"?

Frequently Asked Questions
No, we can try to take the file from the backup. We make backup every night, can retrive a file which have stayed on the server at least 1 night and up to 30 days ago. If this is the case ask your sysadmin. You need to contact your sysadmin directly (not per email, or web) to fix this problem. He does not have the password, so he'll ask you to give a new one. Could be that you are on the boundary of your quota.

I've accidentally deleted a file. How can I get it back?

CS. Dept. Network FAQ
Backups are normally run each morning at 2:00am. If the file was not on the system at that time, we CANNOT recover the file. Recovered files will be in the state they were in at the time of last backup. To request recovery of a file, run the trouble program (http://www.cs.colostate.edu/cgi-bin/trouble.pl)) which will prompt you for all the information necessary to recover the file. Note, the backup/recovery service is only for recovery of files in an emergency situation.

Help! I deleted my file. Do we have backups?

Department of Statistics: Computing Guide - Frequently Asked...
Backups of the entire file system are made once every weekday around 11pm. On weekends (Saturday and Sunday) no backups are made. If you create and lose a file between backups, you are out of luck---there is nothing that can be done. On the other hand, if the file has been available for over 24 hours during a weekday, then the last version can be recovered. Please note that file recoveries are tedious chores and rate an extremely low priority.
