The PLTW curriculum was first introduced to 12 New York State high schools in the 1997 - 98 school year. A year later, PLTW field tested its four unit Middle School Program in three middle schools. Today, the programs are offered in 600 schools in 35 states. There is a critical shortage of engineers and engineering technologists entering the field at a time when technology is reinventing itself every few years.

The program began in September of 1997 and is now in its sixth year. It came about as a result of the number of students in recovery who were enrolling at Augsburg College and asking for academic skills counseling. Realizing that Augsburg had no sober living environment or formal support program for students in recovery, a proposal was created for the StepUP Program. It was approved by the President’s Council and the StepUP Program began its first year with 25 students enrolled.

Certification was tested in 1989 as part of an NCAA pilot program and was approved for all Division I institutions in 1993.

In 1962 Ev Cooper privately published a book entitled IMMORTALITY: PHYSICALLY, SCIENTIFICALLY, NOW, which outlined the cryonics idea. In the same year a college physics teacher named Robert Ettinger privately published the book THE PROSPECT OF IMMORTALITY. Two years later Cooper established the Life Extension Society and actively sought to make cryonics a practical reality.

Stephen Trask and John Cameron Mitchell were working on the play before Stephen started working at Don Hill's Squeezebox in 1994. Stephen & Cheater were the house band for Squeezebox and Trask was the musical director. The only character at this point was the Tommy Gnosis character and the story explored his lovers. John and Stephen then came up with the idea of Hedwig as a drag character who would be one of the lovers, and Stephen forced her onto the bill.
