Answer:Yes, FDNY EMTs can be promoted to paramedic once they receive their paramedic and REMAC certification. When the Department has vacancies, requests for promotion are reviewed and qualified candidates are promoted. This happens several times each year.

Every two years, the Personnel Department conducts civil service testing for public safety employees. Those candidates who successfully complete the testing are either given full time positions or are placed on an eligibility list and hired when a job vacancy occurs. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, have Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, HazMat Awareness and HazMat Operations certification or be enrolled in classes to obtain these certifications in order to apply.
