Do identical twins have identical fingerprints?

Identical Twins FAQ
No. While identical twins share the same DNA, no two sets of fingerprints are exactly alike – including twins. In fact, some mirror twins (identical twins with mirrored characteristics) have fingerprints where the swirls run in opposite directions from their twins’ fingerprints.

Are you identical twins or fraternal twins?

Daily Photo Project - The Twins Index - www.TWINDEX.de
Starting this project, we were sure to be fraternal twins. As we received lots of emails with people telling us that we are just to similar to be fraternal, we became unsure about this. One mail (from a genetic expert) told us to check our blood group, and we both have the same (A+). This is a strong indicator that we are identical twins. To be absolutly sure, we have to do a DNA test. We are looking for a cheap opportunity in Germany. See similar questions...

Why are some twins identical and some fraternal?

Identical Twins FAQ
Identical Twins are developed, or formed, when one of Mom’s fertilized eggs splits into two, and each of the halves develop into a separate baby. The split happens within the first 12 days after the egg has been fertilized. If one of the halves splits again, you have identical triplets. If both halves split, you have identical quadruplets. Fraternal Twins are two separate eggs that are fertilized and then grow into two babies. See similar questions...

Do Identical Twins have the same Emotions?

Identical Twins FAQ
The fact that identical twins are two different people surprises a lot of people. There is a general assumption that because identical twins share the same DNA, they are carbon copies of each other. Trust me, there is no such thing as identical. Identical twins share the same DNA – it’s not identical DNA, by the way - but once the egg splits, each twin develops on their own. Do identical twins have the same IQ?

Identical Twins FAQ
I actually had someone ask me if our boys SHARED an IQ. I still don’t know what that person meant. Our boys prove the theory that two heads are better than one almost every day (our boys are experts at figuring out how to get to places or do things that they shouldn’t be by working together), but identical twins’ IQ can be as similar or as different as any other sibling’s. Can a boy and a girl be identical twins?

Identical Twins FAQ
For all intents and general purposes, the answer is: no. Many people will think boy/girl twins are identical because they look so similar. Not to create a riot amongst parents of identical twins, but the factual answer is: yes. There are a small number of cases (5 or 6 that have been reported) of identical twins of the opposite sex. To find out more information about how this happens, check out our article on Identical Twins. See similar questions...

Do identical twins share the same placenta?

Identical Twins FAQ
Some do, some don’t – it depends on when the egg splits to form the identical twins. If the egg splits within the first few days, they will have two separate placentas. If they egg splits after the first week, identical twins may share one placenta. See similar questions...

How are identical twins born?

Identical Twins FAQ
Approximately two-thirds of twin births in the United States are done by cesarean, and one-third are done vaginally. This is almost the opposite for singleton births. The statistics include those births where one twin is born vaginally, but his or her twin is born by cesarean. It is not uncommon for the second twin to decide to stretch out and enjoy all that room once his or her twin has left, making a vaginal birth impossible. See similar questions...

How Are Identical (MZ) and Fraternal (DZ) Twins Different?

Minnesota Center for Twin and Family Research
Identical twins differ from fraternal twins in the number of genes they have in common. Genes are the chemical units in the cells of the body. They act as blueprints for guiding and directing growth. Identical, or monozygotic (MZ), twins have the same genetic makeup. Shortly after a single egg cell has been fertilized by a single sperm cell, the fertilized egg cell (or zygote) splits in half. Can doctors tell if twins are identical or fraternal?

Minnesota Center for Twin and Family Research
Most think that fraternal twins have two placentas and identical twins share one placenta, but this is not necessarily the case. One-third of identical twins separate within a few days of conception, before the placental tissue has begun to form. Each embryo then grows it's own placenta. So if your doctor said that you and your twin were fraternal because you had two placentas, the doctor may be incorrect. See similar questions...

Can you explain again how you determined the twins were identical or fraternal (zygosity)?

Minnesota Center for Twin and Family Research
Twin zygosity was determined using the following three methods: (a) parents completed a zygosity questionnaire that included questions regarding the twins’ physical similarity and frequency with which family members and others confused them; (b) research staff determined zygosity after rating twins on physical similarity (e.g. eye color, ear shape, etc. See similar questions...

Q20: How similar are identical twins in terms of white and merle patterns?

FAQ ABOUT AUSSIE COLOR
A20: A litter was born in Feb 2000 that contained a pair of identical twin merle pups. They shared the same placenta and fetal sac. They have similar amounts of white and similar merle patterns. They both have split faces. The markings aren't perfect exact duplicates of each other, but they are very close. This is consistent with observations of amount and placement of white markings in identical twin Holstein calves. See similar questions...
