Polymer clay is an oven bake modeling material composed of polymers, resins, coloring agents, and fillers. When baked properly the finished product cures into a tough, very flexible and durable solid material. The flexibility enables the finished piece to be dropped or handled without breaking. It is not rock hard like an "earth clay" where it will shatter if dropped.

Do not fire polymer clay to these temperature - it will give off toxic fumes. The same applies to styrofoam, plastics. Organic materials, such as leaves, seedpods, are fine, but should be thoroughly dried (to avoid little explosions as the water in them boils). Sometimes, this results in your studio smelling like you had a campfire in it.

Many containers are not suitable for storing polymer clays. Because of the plasticizers in the clay, there can be a reaction between the materials. Clay can be sealed in glass or metal containers without any reaction for great lengths of time. The most practical and economical storage containers are made of plastic. Storing your clay in "Tupperware" type food storage containers is a good way to keep your clay at it's best workable condition for long periods.

No polymer clay is truly transparent, due to limitations in polymer chemistry. Several clay brands offer a "translucent" or "transparent" color which looks white before firing, and after firing has a milky appearance. Some clay artists use very thin sheets of translucent clay over colored designs to get partial transparency in their designs - the thinner the clay, the more translucent it is. Sanding and buffing the clay also increases its translucency.
