We've had a few reports about this problem and the majority of the people with the problem are running Windows XP. The easist solution seems to be to goto the Tools->Options->Performance->Advanced menu and simply deselect the "Use video mixing renderer" option. The problem is that the XviD movie you're trying to play was encoded using a newer version of the XviD codec then what's installed on your computer. You should first of all make sure that you have the latest version of the XviD codec installed. If simply upgrading the XviD codec doesn't help it's most likely a problem with ffdshow. Are you running the latest version of Flash Player 9 (labs.adobe.com)? If not, upgrade. Earlier versions (up to version 7) use the deprecated OSS sound system, and their bugs have caused untold misery, from A/V sync problems to refusing to play sound at all. Flash Player 9 uses the ALSA sound system and should be problem-free.
