Consideration should also be given to additional heat sources such as computers, printers, televisions and other electrical appliances, as well as south facing windows. 1 BTU is 0.293 watts and 1 watt is 3.412 BTU.

Sizing a residential HVAC unit is a multi-variable problem that depends on such variables as geographic location, orientation to the sun, construction details, insulation values, window area and type, etc. Under sizing a system may lead to warmer or cooler temperatures than desired by some occupants. Over sizing the system may lead humidity or moisture control problems in the space.

In contrast to traditional window air conditioners, portable air conditioners are slightly less powerful at the same listed BTU. This is due to various reasons from manufacturers inflating their listed BTU amounts to the body of the air conditioner units being inside the space being cooled (and giving off heat). As such - we recommend customers be conservative and buy slightly more AC than they think that they might need.

The capacity in tons of a Trane outdoor unit can be determined by dividing the 7th and 8th digit of the model number by 12. So if the model number is 4TTX4036A1000A, take 36 and divide by 12, equalling 3 tons. This is only for Trane models. Other companies use a different method based on their model number nomenclature. While a heat pump is perfectly capable of effectively heating your home, the temperature of the air coming out of the registers confuses some people.

Selecting the right size of A/C is important because over-sized and under-sized systems can reduce your comfort and increase your utility bill. For example, a pleated air filter that is 20x25x1 means 20 inches wide by 25 inches long by 1 inch thick. Most residential air conditioner furnace filters are 1” thick. The actual measurements of each air conditioner furnace filters are usually about half an inch less than the listed size.

If you are moving a portable air conditioner often, you should consider the cooling needs of the different rooms that you will be using it in and try to get a model that bridges your needs well. Pop-Up campers in the northern states or Canada may not need an air conditioner, but a Texas or Florida camper would probably look strangely at any one with out AC. Even living in the Maryland and camping in the Mid-Atlantic area I am glad I got an air conditioner. An item to keep in mind is that a pop-up has very little (OK, none) insulation.
