Once again, the South American Explorer's Club offers paper maps, both of Machu Picchu and of the Inca Trail. Our maps are contained in atlases that we procure come from estate sales, auctions and antiquarian book dealers who trade in them. They are rare and out of print. We created WardMaps.com as the premier online resource for purchasing antique originals as well as museum quality prints of these rare maps. We also add maps from private collections. Using the latest digital image manipulation software, we carefully remove significant blemishes such as water stains, foxing and tear marks. We do not alter technical information nor the beautiful patina, sometimes called browning, that these historic documents have picked up over time. We do not "blast" the maps with a simple change of color or adjustment of the contrast. That method can result in the loss of the patina and subtleties of the original map.

We utilize two processes to digitize our maps. The first process scans original maps at 300-400dpi via a large-format commercial scanner. Maps are scanned in a single pass, allowing us to capture all of the detailed text, colors, building plans and place names of each map. We do not assemble any of our maps from a series of smaller scans. The second process is photographic, utilized for maps too large or too fragile for the scanner.

Google Maps is a free web-based mapping service application. It powers many map-based services including the Google Maps website and embedded maps on third-party websites using the Google Maps API. GreenMap.org utilizes Google Maps to display all the Green Map projects at GreenMap.org.

Maps can be purchased at any Daniel Boone National Forest office, by mail, or by ordering online. There are separate maps available for the north, south and central portions of the forest. These maps show most Forest Service system roads and trails on a 1/2" = 1 mile scale. Topographical maps are available for $6.00 plus shipping and handling. Ordering information.

With a bubble jet printer, use waterproof paper available from local map or office supply stores; some folks say hairspray works; you can slip them in a zip lock bag; or whitewater retailers often sell materials for keeping river maps dry. th Mountain produces topographic maps specifically for hut use. These maps are available from our reservations office at 970-925-5775 and from the 10th Mountain Store (see menu on this page). Official 10th Mountain maps are also sold at a variety of outdoor retailers in Colorado including Front Range REI stores.

image viewer that can decode JPEG and GIF images is needed to display these maps. Most of the images are JPEG images within the 200K to 300K range; however, some of the images are quite large. Many users can have problems with the larger images. This is a result of not having enough memory to view the image; make sure that your web browser is given enough memory.

For large JPEG and GIF map images, the map must be resized to print the entire image (see below). Even after resizing, the quality and legibility of the printed map is dependent upon the quality of your printer. For quickly printing the less detailed maps, you can save the map image file to your hard drive, and then open Microsoft Word. Select Insert from the menu bar, then Picture/File.

Most of the maps scanned by the University of Texas Libraries and served from this web site are in the public domain. No permissions are needed to copy them. You may download them and use them as you wish. We appreciate credit to "University of Texas Libraries" as the source of the scanned images. A few maps are copyrighted, and are clearly marked as such. Any that are copyrighted by The University of Texas are subject to our Materials Usage Guidelines.

Only a small part of our printed map collection has been scanned and made available on the Web. Currently this amounts to more than 11,000 map images. Because we have very limited staff, we are unable to scan in maps for individual users' requests. However, we would like to know what maps you are interested in seeing on our site, and will take this into account as we have time to scan in additional maps. Please note that we are unable to scan in copyrighted maps.
