The boiler size needed depends on the construction of the house, the size and type of heating system, the geographical location of the house and the amount of radiation in an existing structure. Boucher Energy will perform a detailed heat loss to determine proper sizing.

Heating output is specified in kilowatts, kW, (metric units) or BTUs (Imperial units) and represents the rate at which the system can deliver heat energy. Sizing of heating systems should be done by a qualified heating engineer. It is dependent on many factors including levels of insulation and draught proofing of your home, lowest outside temperature of your locality and patterns of use.

The only way to determine what your actual requirement is to have a heat load done on your home by a qualified heating technician. This calculation looks at the size of the structure, insulation, doors and windows along with your climate area for outdoor design temperature. A heat loss is then calculated to determine what is required for the boiler and the heating elements to heat the structure.

The first step is to determine how much lumber you’ll dry in a year. Then figure your average drying time for each of the species you’ll be drying, and you can calculate the size kiln you need from there. For example: you need to dry 500,000 board feet of oak per year. Fresh off the saw, oak takes about 28-30 days to dry, so you’ll be able to do 12 loads in a year. Each load will need to be 42,000 board feet to give you the 500,000 board feet you need for the year.

Boilers are normally sized according to heat load requirement from the heat loss calculation in the normal way and also taking account of other requirements such as domestic hot water. If normal thermostatic on/off controls are used then it is advisable to use a larger (20 - 25%) boiler to speed up the re-heat times. As a guide, the heat output available from a Radiant UFH system is 100W/m 2 for a solid floor and 70W/m 2 for a timber suspended floor.

Unfortunately, boilers do not last for ever. The useful working life is reckoned to be 15 years and older ones lose efficiency and become prone to breakdown, usually during those cold spells when you depend on your system to keep the house comfortable. Vaillant's solar DHW heating system will provide around 50-60% of annual domestic hot water requirements, but an auxiliary power source is required to ensure there's always hot water on demand. In addition, the boiler is also necessary to operate the central heating system.

Through normal usage, some of the steam escapes and therefore does not return back to boil as water. Radiators make two sounds: "hiss" and "click." The hiss is small amounts of steam leaving the radiator; the click is the valve shutting off the release of steam. The general rule of thumb in aquarium keeping is to have no more that one inch of fish per gallon of water.
