Why are the tree trunks painted white?

What causes that thick mat of webbing on tree limbs and trunks, and is it harmful to the tree?

Frequently Asked Questions - Parks
The webbing is spun by Psocids or "Bark Lice", which feed on mosses and lichens growing on the tree. They cause no damage to the tree. If necessary, the webbing can be washed off using a high pressure nozzle on a garden hose. Back to top No. Spanish moss is a bromeliad, or "airplant". It merely anchors itself to the trees and derives all its' water and nutrients from the air and water that falls on it. You'll see moss growing on fences, wires, and other non-living structures.

I have a white cottony substance on my Hemlock tree. What is it and how do I control it?

If Plants Could Talk:FAQ
This is the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, a serious insect pest of Eastern hemlock and Carolina hemlock. The cottony material is produced by the insect for protection. It is important not to fertilize trees with severe infestations and avoid hanging bird feeders in these trees. Birds can transport them to other susceptible trees. In home landscapes they can be controlled in early spring and fall with 2% dormant oil and in the summer with 1% horticultural oil or insecticidal soap.

I've noticed that all your gourds and housing are painted white. Is there a reason for this?

A Bird's Home
One, martins nest in the summer and that's the hottest time of the year. White is the most reflective color we have and thus, reflects the heat of the sun. We all know that the darker the color, the more heat is absorbed, so with that in mind, try to imagine a baby bird in a dark colored bird house with all that heat and being unable to escape it. For that reason alone, all martin housing should be painted white. Two, white stands out.

Untitled Page
Yes, although painted Formica will no longer serve as an appropriate surface for chopping and other rough use. Formica should be thoroughly washed with powdered detergent, and then primed with XIM - UMA Primer (according to instructions on container). XIM Primer is available through most good independent paint merchants, or can be ordered from Phillips. After allowing the UMA primer to dry for 3 or 4 hours it should be sanded glass-smooth with a very fine paper - 220 or higher.

Why are some Canon lenses painted white or silver?

Canon EOS Beginners' FAQ III - Lenses
Nearly all large telephoto L series lenses have barrels constructed from solid metal and painted off-white, rather than black plastic or black-painted metal. Canon say they do this since white surfaces absorb less heat than black when used out in the sun, and fluorite crystal lens elements are sensitive to heat - they can expand and contract, altering their optical properties. Of course, the fact that a white-painted Canon lens stands out in the crowd is probably part of the reason as well.

Why is a house called "White Haven" painted green?

Ulysses S Grant National Historic Site - Frequently Asked Qu...
Perhaps the most frequent topic for visitor questions is the house's historic Paris Green color. Previous Dent family residences in England and Maryland were called "White Haven," so the familiar name carried over to this property. The Paris Green color dates to the 1870s, and was quite popular during that era. Paint sampling and historic store ledgers confirm that this was indeed the color of the house. Some of the original paint is visible on the back porch, inside the mud room.

Boxerbriefs vs. Trunks - what's the difference?

Underwear by Apollowear
One of the most common inconsistancies that I've seen in the men's underwear world is the use of the terms 'trunk' and 'boxerbrief'. Brands often use these terms interchangeably, however they refer to entirely different things. They are similar, but still very different. I may have this wrong, but as I see it the terms are defined as follows. If you disagree with these definitions please call me on it because these are the definitions that I go by when writing posts.

What is a domain tree?

Environment settings set by a batch file are not working.
In Windows 2000 one domain can be a child of another domain, e.g. child.domain.com is a child of domain.com (a child domain always has the complete domain name of the parent in it), and a child domain and its parent share a two way transitive trust. When you have a domain as a child of another, a domain tree is formed. A domain tree has to have a contiguous name space. The name of the tree is the root domain name, so in the example the tree would be referred to as root.com.

The DT FAQ :: That's Frequently Asked Questions foo'! Now qu...
because being colorblind, I don't see in color, and instead of driving me and everyone around me nuts by constantly asking if one color is the same as what I used last time, I just do DT as line art, occasionally i add some color, or do a special color pic, but otherwise i just say screw color.
