Soure routing is an IP option which allows the originator of a packet to specify what path that packet will take, and what path return packets sent back to the originator will take. Source routing is useful when the default route that a connection will take fails or is suboptimal for some reason, or for network diagnostic purposes. For more information on source routing, see RFC791.

Routing is usually performed by a dedicated device called a router. Routing is a key feature of the Internet because it enables messages to pass from one computer to another and eventually reach the target machine. Each intermediary computer performs routing by passing along the message to the next computer. Part of this process involves analyzing a routing table to determine the best path.

Auto Routing can route traffic on demand, supporting load balancing and fault tolerance based on L3 and L4 information. For example, you can have source IPs from several WAN links perform fault tolerance between the WAN links.

Some servers require fixed source IP addresses, and you may encounter problems cause by load balancing algorithms. Persistent Routing can help to avoid this kind of problem.

Lead routing refers the when a response becomes a lead, the lead is then forwarded to the correct person based on the lead properties. This might mean that the lead is "routed" by email to the correct sales person based on company size, region, or other factors. The lead can also be routed into a sales CRM system which does the assignment and notification.

Sending a message to a group is called multicasting, and its routing algorithm is called multicast routing.
