Spray the yard, spray and flea-bomb the house, flea bathe the cat or dog and then use either powders/sprays or one of the new spot-on products (Advantage or Frontline). The powders/sprays need daily application, while the spot-on products are applied monthly. It may take a few months to see good results.

All dogs who come to Doggie Day Care are required to either be on a flea preventative medication or will be check for fleas every time they come. If fleas are found on your pet, they will be sent home. Our facility is specifically set up to not inhabit fleas as our outdoor yard and rubber floor are cleaned and sanitized daily.

For your home, we recommend a combination of household flea "bombs" and an area treatment spray. Once a flea population has been established in your house hold there is no quick fix to the problem. First things first, get rid of the fleas ON your pet. The veterinarians here can prescribe a one time medication (Capstar) that will kill most of the fleas that are on your pet, but it only lasts 4-6 hours.

Fleas and ticks are not only a nuisance for your pet, but they can also be dangerous to their health. Ticks carry several types of diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Ehrlichiosis, and Tularemia, all of which you can contract too. Fleas can also cause health problems in your pets such as skin allergies, internal parasites (tapeworms), anemia, and in cats they can spread 'cat scratch disease'.

We are recommending that our cat owners use one of the topical flea preventatives: Advantage or Frontline, also known as TopSpot. Advantage kills fleas within 24 hours and continues to work for 4 weeks. (*The canine product, Advantix, is very toxic to cats.) Frontline for Cats kills ticks and fleas and is often used on the indoor-outdoor kitties. Both products are topical liquids, which are very safe and available from your Veterinarian. Again, never use products intended for dogs on your cat.

There are several good flea products which have come out in the last two years, three of which include Program, Frontline and Advantage. Ask your Vet which one would be the best for your pet in your environment. In addition to treating your animal you must also treat your environment. Some suggestions include Flea Stoppers for inside. It's not usual for birds to get fleas. However, they are known to get mites which if left untreated can be severely unsightly, early treatment with Ivermectin could prevent disfiguration.

Fleas are everywhere in our environment such as yards, sidewalks, parks, hiking trails, homes, other animals, etc. Once your pet brings fleas inside your home, they live in the carpet, on your pet's bedding, and your furniture. They will breed and multiply and continue to use your pet for their blood meals. They may even bite you.

First, give your pet a bath with a mild, hypoallergenic or itch-relieving shampoo to wash away the flea dirt and fleas. You do not need to use a flea shampoo unless your pet is severely infested with fleas. After your pet is completely dry, apply a topical product such as Advantage or Frontline that will start to kill adult fleas within about 12 hours and provide one month of flea control. Every pet in the household must be treated in order for flea control to work.
