Phosphorus from fertilizers runs off lawns and ends up in area wetlands, ponds, and lakes where it promotes algae growth. Algae can damage or kill the water body's eco-system. The make-up of all fertilizers is indicated by a series of three numbers on the package. The middle number indicates the amount of phosphorus the fertilizer contains. Look for a middle number of "0" to be sure you are buying a phosphorus-free fertilizer.

This is a tough one to answer, because fertilization is so tremendously tied to water quality, potting medium, temperature, light and a variety of other factors. However, if you just have a few plants, and don't want to fuss around a lot learning about the intricacies of water and fertilizer, I'd simply suggest you get any reasonably balanced 'orchid' fertilizer, that is low in urea, and use it at approximately 1/4 to1/2 the label strength every other watering.

You should fertilize your lawn the first part of April. Use a crabgrass control if crabgrass is a problem. If you just want a green up, use Jirdon’s Greenmaster, which is 25% nitrogen. You will also want to fertilize sometime in the summer. You can again use Greenmaster or you can use a slow-release, Jirdon’s Heat and Drought Stress formula, or a weed n’ feed depending on the needs of your lawn.

Although lawns benefit greatly from a late fall fertilizer, trees and shrubs do not. The fertilizer, which is mainly nitrogen, encourages new shoot growth in woody plants. Encouraging new growth at the end of the growing season may allow a greater chance of winter damage. Late fall pruning is also not recommended, unless the branches are damaged or my break to a heavy snow load. Grass clippings do not make good mulch for roses.

Cool season grasses such as bluegrass, fescue and ryegrass should be fed once in the spring and two or three times in the fall during the months of September, October, November and December. Warm season grasses such as zoysia, (which turns a tan color from October – April) should be fed one or two times per year from May-August. We recommend using Merrifield Premium and Merrifield Select Lawn Foods, which have been custom blended for the conditions in this area.
