Metal tape or frankly anything metal on a sloped ceiling, which means some cold air, is reacting with the metal which is reacting with the metal tape, thereby causing condensation and the compound to crack. Place your hand on your wall and move it up to where the tape is. I would think it is colder to the touch. Greg is right not just regular compound should have been used.
