You probably should, unless you're wedded to the past. Pretty much every video camera and accessory available today is digital. The days of the analogue camera are very much gone. (This was a real question when the MiniDV camcorder was launched and this FAQ written back in 1998!) The question remains as to what kind of video camera you should buy, and that depends on your needs, as we will discuss in later sections.

There are several reasons to consider buying into MiniDV equipment, and some good reasons not to as well. It's easy to take still pictures and send them to the web. Digital printing is the process in which printed output is generated on demand by an output device. Large format printing generally refers to output larger than tabloid sizes, or about 11x17. At SOS-Station, large format usual means 22x28 inches to billboard sizes.

Yes we can, and we welcome the opportunity to work with artists and photographers who are already doing digital work. But there are a few caveats. First, it's extremely important that you be working on a high-quality color-calibrated monitor, and that you understand the issues involved in color-management. Second, since we don't control the color-management process from start to finish, we can't guarantee that the final print will precisely match the image that you see on your monitor.

If you can upload or email your digital image, please use the JPEG file format. This can be up to 5Mb (when compressed). If it is larger than this, please send the image on a CD, or if it is saved in a different file format such as .tif, or .gif. Images can be up to 100Mb on a CD. An uncompressed TIFF is probably best. Disks should be sent in a bubblewrap envelope and include a hardcopy of the image if exact colour-matching is required.

Due to the variations of different screens and individual computer settings, as wel as the quality of the transparencies, colors may not look 'true' to the actual work. A screen will never replace viewing the artwork in real life!
