Almost all of our barrels have a bandsaw cut one inch from the muzzle end of the barrel. This indicates that the barrel is not useable beyond that point. When we hand lap our barrels, we do so from each end of the barrel. Because the lapping compound is applied to the lap directly next to the ends, the bore becomes worn slightly oversize. This oversize condition does not extend more than .50"-.

Rifle barrels wear mainly in two areas ? the chamber throat area and the crown. The throat erodes due to the high temperature flame from the burning powder and the swaging of the bullet into the rifling grooves. Crowns are usually damaged during cleaning. Refurbished barrels have at least 1 inch cut off from the chamber area, and the chambers are extended using piloted reamers in a floating holder. Threads are extended or cut on a lathe with a single point threading tool.

There are some who swap barrels just by lining up witness marks on the barrels with a mark on the receiver. When we tried this we had problems. (Which is why we started playing with lathes and Remington "take off" barrels.) It was very frustrating to go to the range only to find that the neck sized reloads wouldn't chamber, or a shot at the hunter benchrest sighter hit one of the record targets after a barrel change.

While we're aware of "bad press" associated with the use of cleaners with ammonia as part of the solution, we have never seen any damage in one of our barrels caused by the use of ammonia. The rumor is that copper-removing cleaners with ammonia will pit and damage the interior surface of a barrel. Ammonia is very effective as a copper remover. We use solvents, such as Butch's Bore Shine, to remove copper during the break-in. We routinely leave Butch's solution in the barrel over night too.

We are asked if barrels can be sent directly to individuals or if they must be sent to a Federal Firearms Licensee. Rifle barrels can be purchased by individuals and sent directly to the buyer. There are no federal laws that prevent this. Rifle barrels are no different than other gun components such as scopes or stocks. The only restricted part of a firearm is the receiver. Further, if you already own a receiver you can send it directly to a gunsmith in any state to have it rebarreled.

Endurance® can be cut with most saw types. When using a power miter saw, a high tooth count (80 or more) carbide tip is best. Be sure to have the blade up to speed before beginning your cut. Hack saws and other saw types with metal cutting blades will do the job.

No. It is not recommended to use a circular saw to cut pavers. A brick splitter or a high-powered saw with a diamond blade is recommended. These are readily available to rent at Michigan Skid Loader (www.mslinc.com) or other equipment rental stores. For a few cuts, we can cut them for you for a small charge.

No. Our barrels are only 7/16 in diameter at the muzzle. Also, California law makes it to difficult for us to offer a threaded barrel. We do offer an extended barrel for the 17-22, 19-23 and 26-27 kits. (NO THREADS).

Not without checking with the Conservation Commission first. Even dead trees prevent erosion and host wildlife. Not all tree cutting requires a filing, but all tree cutting in the buffer zone requires checking.

additional gage on the top face close to the cut (several top gages visible in pictures on home page) can improve the results, but it is more difficult to work with because you will cut very close to it. What the top gage will do, if you use one, is improve the results for the first 5-10% of the cut depth. If the wire is too long for the channel by 1/2" or so, the length can be cut from the centre arm, which is the coloured tip. If the arm needs to be shortened by an inch or more, remove half from each side and coat the ends. This will preserve the curvature of the wire.

We miter the ends of the sticks rather than make short corners as we did in the past. With the short corners there were extra seams in the wall and we had to charge for the corners because they consumed material. With the corners mitered on the ends of the sticks there are; less seams, most people find the install easier, and we don't have to charge for corners.
