Yes- in some cases. We will register your Telephone Adapter so that the 911 calls made through that adapter are routed to the correct service center for the service address you provided at signup. Please note: 911 is only available from the address for which your phone is registered. If you use your adapter from other than the registered address, we cannot guarnatee that the call will be completed or that an the operator will be able to assist you.

All major cell phone companies, with the exception of Verizon Wireless, currently support the 2-1-1 dialing code. 2-1-1 systems throughout California have been working with Verizon Wireless since July 2005 and hope to come to an agreement soon. We strongly urge customers of Verizon Wireless to contact customer support and request this service.

The availability to use the 911 service greatly depends on the VoIP service provider you choose. Some do NOT have 911 emergency calling, others offer limited 911 dialing that does NOT send phone number of address information to the dispatch operator, while others offer enhanced 911 that functions very similarly to regular phones by sending your phone number and address information to the dispatch operator.

A cellular phone can be extremely helpful in the event of an emergency but cannot be relied upon. Communication is available only on some segments of the trails and only at some of the huts. From our experience, reception can vary, depending on location and quality of the phone. We ask that you keep the phone in the bottom of your pack, and that you respect others by not using it inside the hut. Most people go to the huts to get away from phones!

Yes. You get connected to 911; however, when you are connected through the operator we do not get your address or phone number on our enhanced 911 screens. (Many of us did not have 911 when we grew up and we would call the operator who would then transfer us to police, fire, or ambulance when needed.) By not dialing 911 it slows down the process by preventing us from simply verifying your address. When you call in an emergency, you are often upset, afraid, and not always thinking rationally.

When there is an emergency, lives are in danger, serious injury, serious medical condition, crime in progress, or any other situation needing immediate attention.

The police dispatcher answers all 911 phone calls. Once the type of emergency is determined it is transferred to the appropriate agency, i.e., Fire or EMS.
