Above ground pool filters are designed to sit next to the pool and be below water level so that they are gravity fed. The farther a filter is placed from the pool the less affective it will be. If you are using standard equipment try to keep it within ten feet of the pool. For longer runs you should consider a larger HP pump. If the pool is in the ground and the equipment is at ground level I would go with an in ground pool pump.

The frequency of backwashing will depend on many factors including the size of your filter, flow rate of your plumbing, and bather load in your pool. You will know your filter needs to be backwashed when the pressure reading on your filter reaches the specified level (as set out in the filters manuals guidelines). Whenever the pressure reaches this level the filter should be backwashed. It is ususally 10-15 psi higher than the psi when the filter was new of just thoroughly cleaned.

Cartridge pool filters have won over many pool owners for their ease of maintenance, simply open the housing, pull out the filter cartridge and wash off. Cartridges can also be soaked in special solutions to remove mineral deposits. Sand filters are also very easy as far as maintenance. The sand filter is designed to allow for backwashing that will knock loose accumulated debris leaving the sand clean and ready for more filtering of your pool water.

Most instruction manuals require the pool to be with in an inch of level. For overall appearance and integrity of the pool that is a very good rule of thumb. There are certain conditions that would make a pool that is off level by more than an inch still safe. If the pool is in the ground with dirt packed around it the level is not a safety factor. The more sand or dirt cove the pool has on the inside and the more soil packed around the outside the more variance a pool can tolerate.

The three main types of pool filters you have to choose from are: cartridge filters, sand filters, and diatomaceous earth (D.E.) filters. Each filter has different strengths. Your decision will be based on what is more important to you: the cleanest clearest water possible, or ease of maintenance.

The smaller the particles the pool filter will trap the cleaner your pool will be. Diatomaceous earth (DE) pool filters are widely recognized for filtering down the smallest particles of any pool filters (3-5 microns). Two to three feet is ideal.. Any more than that and you run a bigger risk of the pool caving in. You always want to make sure the water level is higher than the dirt. If the pool is to far into the ground and the ground around it gets to wet it could easily cave in. It is also a good idea to wait at least two years after the pool is installed before draining it. This give the dirt around it plenty of time to pack. Even then the pool should be drained and refilled in a day or two.

A dirty filter maybe the problem. When the filter pressure rises 8-10 PSI over the clean starting pressure, it is time to backwash or clean the filter If there is algae in the pool, it maybe clogging the filter, keeping the pressure high. UVs can be fitted into the return pipework from the filter to the pond, provided that the unit(s) can handle the flow without causing backpressure.
